be afraid, very afraid. After our entertainment at Datchet (how is it possible on such a large reservoir for two Bosses to crash and burn? - nice one Steve), it was sobering to do the diagnosis of how we ended up with a broken mast. OK, the strains of two boats colliding at a combined 20knots didn't help, but it turns out one of the main shroud bolts snapped (how many tons?), leading to a nice chain of events that even carbon can't cope with. On examining the bolt where it goes through the end of the space frame, there's a lot of corrosion - not surprising with the combination of alloy and stainless - so this is a timebomb that might be ticking on your boat. OK, we sail on the sea, but even with a good rinse down in fresh water before packing up, there's enough there to keep Duracell interested. I reckong it's worth taking a look at those bolts ate least once per season to check for any weakness. Now I know what a new mast costs (not allowing for the fact we might not get it before the Nationals), it's a simple preventive measure. So consider yourselves warned

John,

If you are in the market for a new mast, what say you consider a new boat to go with it - maybe a nice light blue one?

How was the weekend, i hope the damage wasnt in the first race?

Chris
p.s. who is doing the report?

so, you haven't found an alternative yet? don't like the blue though. While you're thinking, why not come to the Nationals?

no not yet, need to sell the boss first but dont see that happening. Having said that need to fix it first as its still bust (well needs rivets in spreader bracket so not as major as yours). What exactly happened?

well, we had a slight altercation while coming down wind with the kite up, twin trapezing and in a gust. Technically the crash is our fault but we won't admit it. HA HA.

Personally, even though it was Red Octobers fault, I think it not very cleaver that Peter & John put themselves into a position where they knew damn well the Murray boys couldn't see them! They should be grateful it was only severe hull damage that was caused and not carbon pole into the crew & or helm at 20knots!

I think the 18foot Skiff's have a rule that Port / Starboard, Windward boat keep clear, does not apply when one boat has the kite up and the other doesn't. The one without, has to keep clear - much safer!

Pete

oh actual proper damage - can we see piccies? Was one boat going upwind and one downwind? Been there done that at 2001 nationals, we only snapped a rack and richards head though.....

Pete, I think I'd agree with your point of view if I believed that Red Oktober didn't see us, but if a boat is piling down with three sails up, first shouting 'starboard', and then 'oh god, what do we do?', I think it's reasonable to assume that we were very visible. Also, I don't think Steve/Nick would claim not to have seen us. We are very civilised in the Bosses. And we are not 18ft skiffs.

It's also true that these things happen very fast, and a decision to take evasive action can go either way. In this case, I think we all agree that we got away lightly. But notice that I was not apportioning blame - I simply started this thread to highlight potential corrosion problems in key structural components, which, with care and observation, can be avoided.

It's important to note also that the mast breakage did not occur in the first race, but the third, after we'd patched up the first damage (good stuff that black tape), and after an analysis of the time line of that event, I'm learning some lessons about the forces that come into play on a mast when the rig hits the water hard, with two fat boys leveraging it into the water.

I'll reveal all the details only on receipt of several pints of beer at the Nationals, so you'll have to come along Chris By the way, the event at Stokes Bay 2001 did come into the conversation........

we're in discussion with Graham right now. He reckons he can repair it with a new tube - a new one has to come from Australia or something, and no guarantees about delivery in time.
Might have to start looking for a loaner soon......:-(

So, who is actually going? John, do you think you will be able to get a mast in time? I would be useful to know some numbers to see if it is actually worth going! We intend to go but see little point if there is no one to race against.

Yes we are definitely going, butwe will be short of practice, as we are unlikely to get a mast before the 21st See elsewhere for heart twanging plea for a loaner!
Don't worry, there will be some other Bosses there!
