Just a question, probably very stupid, but its bugging me. When beating up wind in medium to high gusting winds, is it better to let the sail out and let it run flatter?
The reason I ask is often I get blown over as the wind hits the hull and I'm wondering if the old saying of 'Flat boat, fast boat' applies to the Buzz?

Flat is fast - make the foils work for you and give you lift to windward through the water.

Healed boat causes the foils not to work properly, also causes you to pull on the rudder to keep a straight line and is therefore applying the brake on the boat.

So long as everything else is setup correctly (Standing and running rigging) just keep playing the main to keep the boat flat with crew hard wiring and helm hard hiking, and the boat will do well.

Keeping the boat flat is important. Make sure the boat is set up for the condition (e.g. mast rake, forestay tension, cummingham, outhaul and kicker) for the wind and wave conditions. My strategy is to set the boat for an average condition with the boat pointing high, boat level and crew and helm hiking and trapezeing with out over stretching. When a gust arrives (should be looking for them) ease the main sheet, say 100mm at a time and consider pinching in the very strong gusts.

I shell be organizing a Buzz training event in the Solent in May, see the posts on the Buzz only events page.

Thanks Mike, Pete. I suspected as much I was going to take a GPS out with me to confirm, but I don't need to now. Pinching is a useful tip too, thanks guys.
