Hi

Reading the topic on the Hyde new sails just now, I saw the 500s have been seeing a lot of your transoms! They haven't threatened Tony Hunt in his V3000 at Wilsonian yet either, with him sailing off 1010, but he is good. I guess they're still learning the boat and their day will come?

I bumped into Stewart and Zoe in the bar at the Paignton Regatta and mentioned the event below which we're trying to get established. It could maybe become an annual event, promoting our type of boats?

June at Queen Mary is looking favorite at the moment, we've had a positive response from the club. Some of the better Vago sailors seem to be up for it, although they are struggling to fit it in with their Laser sponsored series and training events. We're meeting them at a combined event at Draycote next weekend so will get the chance to talk further.

The 405s have been looking for a shared event, but I haven't approached the 500s yet. Can you guys commit to this as a class event? If so, contact info@3000class.org.uk or tel. 07979 344044 a.s.a.p. so that we can confirm with the club.

Rob

Hi Rob,

As we mentioned before we'd most likely come along, obviously i can't guarantee interest from others, but i would expect a minimum of 4 Buzzes to be there, maybe more if you can organise good weather for it!!

Stuart and Zoe.
Buzz 763.

Hi
We would really welcome a joint event with these classes although I am not convinced an event racing without handicap is the way to attract a good number of boats. I have looked at the handicaps and they are (hope I have them right or at least in the right ball park):
RS500 - 960
Vago - XD possibly 1000??
Buzz - 1005
L3000 - 1030
405 - 1089
We have raced with 9 RS500s at Chichester Harbour Federation Week and I would not really say they were viewing our transom most of the time but in virtually all races we beat most of them on handicap so I wouldn’t be that inspired to race against them without a handicap. This is with a difference of PY number of 46 - why would 405s want to race head to head when they have a whopping 129 (well over 10%) different?? For comparison an ISO is 926, 79 ‘faster’ than a Buzz on PY and I don’t think many of us would want to race them with no handicap?? Add to that the fact the slower boats will be further disadvantaged by dirty wind from the start and therefore not be able to strategically use the favoured bits of the course I am not convinced this would work. I may be tempted to attend the event (depending on venue and date) if there is a guarantee of lots of Buzzes but would very much consider it a race against them and not the other classes.

Being more positive I would be keener to attend if races are either on handicap or a pursuit type with perhaps one race in the week-end with no handicap to see how it goes.

On another thread how do other Buzzes view TASA events?? I am fully supportive and would love to see a big Buzz fleet at some events that we commit to as a class but feel it is more likely to be worth travelling to those without training as I feel I would get more from training run by Pete Lindley, Andy Holmes, Stuart or the Downs lads and lasses as they all really understand our boat (the trainers used by TASA are top notch so I’m not making any comments against them here).

I would also be happy to have some of our events as part of other regattas – even if not windward/leeward courses – such as the Goodacre Cup at Roadford - any other suggestions?? Having been involved with organising events at Langstone it is a lot of work and uses a lot of ‘duties’, when we already struggle to find ROs and safety boat cover for our club racing, for what seems to be less and less boats (saying that all those involved do enjoy hosting the Buzzes and ISOs as they find us really friendly and appreciative classes) so for this reason I favour piggy-backing on work already being done for some events.

For a week-end I think we consider 2 – 3 hours (125ish miles) is reasonable distance to travel but we would travel further to Nationals and Inlands and also to locations where it is nice to tag an extra day or two and make it a bit of a holiday (such as Devon) – what do others think?

Anyway hopefully this will get some discussions going – do post your thoughts as it will help those organising racing to put on the events the class wants which will hopefully lead to lots of boats on the water.

Happy sailing

Some good points, and I like the idea if mixed formats. More of that later.

The Vago handicap has drifted out ... at their AGM they agreed with Laser that the manufacturer would recommend the following in the lead-up to a RYA listing: XD 2 up - 1050, Std 2 up - 1080. They started at 984 then 1000 for the XD. I imagined that the RS500 might go the same way, but not to the same extent. I can't believe the Vago is slower than a standard Laser 3000 on 1030, but we have always felt the Laser 3000 is harshly rated.

A Grafham Grand Prix style event could be good, with three handicap races on the Saturday and a pursuit on the Sunday, maybe with the pursuit non-discardable. The pursuit could be windward/leward, maybe with gates, or around the cans. You're definitely right about this being an attractive event for people to attend. One of the main attractions for me is to get 40 or so similar boats on the start line together, and also to see how they really perform against eachother. Should be fun, with some good natured rivalry, it's not intended to be a 'battle of the classes'.

We'll be extracting 3000 placings to count as a series event. It would be great if other classes would commit to do the same, to help boost turn-outs from all classes. Must be more attractive than a regatta? Keep suggestions coming!

Thanks

Rob

Hey Guys,

Just noticed this and TASA would be fully willing to back a single wire event as much as we would one that combines single and twin wire! It would be great to get some 500 and Vago guys as well as Buzzes and ISO's and TASA would be happy to aid/arrange such an event!

we are still looking for venues for next year and Queen Mary seems to be very interested and popular event, so perhaps there?

as many of you know we already have a load more events coming up, and for more infpormation on those and to join TASA please look at www.TASA.org.uk and join up to become a TASA boat, after all its free!

After reading your posts about a possible single wire TASA event for 2008 Alex and I have booked QMSC on the 7th and 8th June 2008 for a TASA single wire only event (the results from the racing will of course go towrds our series running next season)

Designed for you to showcase how great your class is by racing it against other single wire boats.

Saturday is fun day, with speed trials and other such friendly competitions along with race 1, leading on to a full racing day on Sunday

Remember to come to TASA events you need to become a TASA boat which is free! You can do this by submitting the membership form which can be found at www.TASA.org.uk, and while you're there don't forget to check out our forums for some friendly banter and to keep up to date with the latest TASA developments!
