I have just bought a Buzz and would like to know if there is a rig set up guide out there to help me get the boat set up and some additional setting guides for various wind strengths. By this I mean light, average and windy conditions.

There seem to be quite a few permutations so I ma sure someone has worked out some general rules of thumb.

Look forward to any guidance anyone can give.

Cheers

Hi,

I usually keep the same setup in all conditions from 0 to 25-30 kts... the mast is quite felxible and allows de-powering by easing the swatcher and pulling the cunningham hard.
I have set the mast rake to 7.18 m (from top of the mast to deck floor at the base of the "A"shaped support for the rudder), unfortunately the tension gauge I use for measuring rig tension is an old one different from what you usually find in the UK, and has a different scale. I'll check the conversion from the gauge units to kilos and post it in the next days, possibly.

Best way to have the boat well rigged and set up... come to the EuroCup on Garda, nice place, nice people... plenty of help for everyone!

Thanks Paolo and I will get the tape measure out. Would have loved to come to Garda having been there with my children doing Oppie training but this year time is short so I am staying local and doing Aldeburgh week to get into the swing of things. Next year I hope!

All the best

I have been able to check the conversion table for my tension gauge.
Tension, measured on the shrouds, should be around 160-170 kgs.

Other general settings: cunningham does a lot in bending the mast, so pull harder as you need a flatter sail (I have it on with no wind, then leave it loose as soon as I can get more power, pull again when I start having troubles in keeping boat flat). Also the swatcher helps in controlling mast bend, basically have it on (without inverting the mast bend!) to have a stiffer mast and more power in your mainsail.

Be sure you set the mainsheet strops at the right length for your setting. If too long, you'll not be able to have the boom at the centreline (no pointing and no power), if too short when you work the mainsheet you pull the boom inwards but also down (extra load for you, and when you ease the boom will fly up and open immediately the leach ... not easy to keep the boat level in these conditions).

And try to always keep the boat flat.

See you sometimes in Italy... or if I come to the UK!

Hi,

Mast rake as Paolo has suggested above, or somewhere close to. Rig tension is normally measured on the front of the jib and somewhere between 20 and 25 on a Superspars gauge will get you going well, we normally mark a 20 and 25 on the mast by the jib halyard wire loop or hook and set it somewhere near the middle.

We don't play around with mast settings much for different winds, but concentrate on sailing well if possible. We also tend to set the swatcher, outhaul and cunningham for the wind conditions when launching and then only adjust the kicker during racing.

Nationals this weekend at Lee on Solent SC, would be good to see you there!!

Many thanks for the helpful tips and will give this a go. Unfortunately not able to do the nationals this year but will be doing Aldeburgh Week to work out how to sail the boat as it looks like we will have no time on the water before then. If anyone else is going to Aldeburgh it wold be good to meet up.

All the best

You are still in time to come to Garda for the EuroCup... that will be a good chance to meet other buzzes AND have a nice holiday at the same time...
