I have started sailing my Boss 745 again and need to know what Portsmouth Yardstick Number/s is/are in use within the class for handicap racing. RYA do'nt supply one, I guess because of lack of reported Boss sailing! I sail an unmodified boat, if that makes any difference.

Has it as 869. I would say that this is for an unmodified Boss.

I think we've been sailing off 847

Downloaded yardstick last season and we have been sailing off 847 as well but am quite happy to get any help I can so 869 sounds good to me.

Thankyou all that replied for your help. Those of you who do race in handicap class, how do you fair against other classes.

It depends on the size of the water and the wind strength. You will be very competitive on a 1 mile windward leeward course at Force 3 and above using the 847 number. On the sea, you will always be competitive, particularly against 49ers, 29ers and RS800s, who's bows tend to 'go down the mine'due to the fine entry of their hull. You'll also do well in pursuit racing against conventional boats, when you can gybe away andsail in clear air on downwind legs, rather than get stuck in the procession. You usually start late in the fleet so you'll also get a good idea of which way to go on early legs.

If you are in a mixed fleet and you cannot carry your kite, then you are unlikely to win. You will also struggle against Laser 5000s in light winds. You need a bit of breeze to get the hull going upwind.

Hope this helps.
