Hi All,

1001 is on the water and after some days tweaking and a first sail, last weekend the first races done...
3-4 Beaufort.. Very nice and in fact easy sailing (no wings on)..

I have question on the batten tension..
With nice adjusting gear the batten tension can easily be adjusted..
At first I gave more tension..
What is the best tension... I Have the feeling that one put very easy too much tension on (for fuller shape) but hard to let the main flap/ plop when tacking. Rolltacking helps to give extra pressure in the sails..
Is it better to lower the tension??
Is it wise to give extra attention to the top batten?? More in light winds/

Who has advice?

Hans

Batten tension is a very personal thing. It depends on your sailing stylr really. Without batten tension you reduce the need for having to pull the cunningham on as the leech is allready open downwind and upwind. but you will end up with a very flat but not a very powerful sail, so good if your light. If your heavy than apply more to compensate but be careful not to hook the leech round to much in the light stuff or you wont go anywhere.Againdown to sailing style , if you foot off a lot then more batten tension if you stuff a lot then less batten tension.
Hope that helps
Neil

I assume that foot of is a wide angle on the beat and stuff means narrow angle, but any help understanding "foot off" and "stuff" would be welcome...

Foot off = not point as high as a comfortable close hauled course. Not have the sails tightly pinned in.

Stuff up = pinch / feather the wind / closer than a comfortable close hauled course.

Thanks.. We'll fiddle a bit more with this tension..
The top batten (was the all important one on a tasar, and I think also with the sobstads...) is there some excta attention needed..

Is this one the first to loosen if wind increases?? (automatic rig function..)
