Hi
On the Buzz web-site you may have spotted an open at Langstone SC (says Club racing but it is an open) in October. This is an event run in parallel with a Laser 2000 open and will probably also be extended to ISO's (separate starts). Details have yet to be finalised but the main aim is to attract local Buzzes but those from further a field are equally welcome - the more the merrier. Langstone SC is next to the bridge going onto Hayling Island about 5 miles east of Portsmouth. Its a small friendly club and beer is very cheap. Watch this space for further details (or events page on web-site) - It would certainly help nearer the time with catering if we know how many people may turn up so why not post your interest?
Cheers - Jane

Hi Mark and Jane. Buzz 1035 will be there hopefully!! To anyone else who is thinking of going, it was a great event last year, very well organised. Hopefully there will be lots of Buzzes out practicing for this event at Hayling Island next week!

Cas - Not aware of any for sale locally - suggest you keep an eye on the web page and classifieds in Yachts and Yachting. Have you sailed one? If you want to come out in ours for a spin you would be welcome, if interested e-mail me with your contact details (it would be easier to arrange on the phone).

Neil - looking forward to seeing you on the water at Fed week (not Monday though unfortunately as work commitments). Any other Buzzes joining us?

Best wishes
Jane

Cas - With my crews growing up, I have decided to sell my Buzz - number 913, currently sailed regularly at Chew Valley (just South of Bristol). I am moving up to an RS800. My three sons think it is a mid-life crisis!
I will be sailing at Restronguet, but after that will be looking for a sale to a good home. Are you still interested in finding a Buzz for sale?
David

Hi
This is really a request to Roger or Chris from our (Langstone SC) Sailing Sec as she would like to send fliers for the Langstone asymmetric event to clubs with Buzzes. With all the work that is being done on 'Where are the Buzzes' do you have a list of clubs that we can tap into? We can find addresses/e-mails from the web so any info on club names would be really useful if its easy to get hold of.
Many thanks
Jane

Jane,

I can supply membership addresses, Roger may be able to provide a bigger list based on the 'the map' and possibly more.

Hi

Hannah Here from Buzz 1027... My log in is still not working! Hence the different name!
Stuart and I are coming but we are having problems with finding any where to stay! Has any one found a B&B near by? Or dare I say it a camp site!? (rather not camp but needs must and all that!)

As you know we would both like a drink after a days sailing and it would be a shame to only be there for the Saturday and then drive home .

See you all soon

Love Hannah and Stuart

This is the list so far of people who have expressed an interest in this event and are likely to come. It would be very useful to know if any one else is likely to show or if the possibles may be definite, mainly for catering purposes but also to help the race officials (registration is on the day so no need to express you interest anywhere else other than here – we’ll pass on details of numbers for catering purposes). News on the grapevine is there will be bacon butties available in the morning (for which there is a charge) and there will be sarnies/rolls and cake after (included in the price). Obviously if you are unsure you will still be able to just roll up and enter on the day.

Definites (I think):
847 Mark & Jane - Langstone SC
943 Kent + crew - Langstone SC
947 Isobel & Bob - Queen Mary SC
1004 Gary & Steve - Hillhead SC
1035 Neil & Cath - Thorney SC
799 Mike Ford & Rich Powell - IBM/Langstone SC
1027 Stuart & Hannah - Medway SC

Possibles:
559 Chris Ayres & Len Rich - Tudor SC
987 Roger & Penny - Roadford SC
?? + one other from - Hill Head SC
?? Buzz from - Hayling SC

If people are up for it we could try to book places in the local pub for Saturday evening dinner….any thoughts?…There’s also Chris Jagger’s band (http://www.hogthelimelight.co.uk/music.html)playing in a nearby local village (3 miles from club) if people are interested as well (tickets for this would probably need to be bought in advance - £6 I think, we've seen them before and they were good fun).

Not discussed this event with the boss yet, but personally I'm divided between sailing the ISO (1013 'Team RWO') or the buzz (950 'Swampduck')

Stopping over on Saturday night isn't a problem if you have to go home then fine - just make sure you are back on Sunday morning to finish the battle!!!! Grrrrr!!!! Oh sorry, the friendly racing (Don't want to scare people away!)

Suppose I should ask the Supervisor Manager numpty at work for the weekend off - else our descision will be decided for us!

Pete

Annie - Website for campsites on Hayling (nearest sites to LSC): http://www.haylingcampsites.co.uk/ (lower Tye/Fleet Farm are the closest) or our Commodore says "I don't think there should be any problem with competitors sleeping in a camper van on our site for the night!". Although the club would be locked there are public loos across the road and the pub we are likely to go to is across the way so not far to stagger back. Unfortunately we don't have any grass so tents aren't an option.

Hi all,

Now i've just realised that this is a 2 day event i feel i ought to do something about where i'm going to stay Saturday night. I think the most likely option is camping and am thinking of Fleet Farm Camp Site, will anyone else be staying here? Or any other suggestions?

Stuart.

Hi Stuart
You and Hannah would be welcome to stay with us (we have heating and lots of douvets which may appeal to Hannah!) - we are about 3 miles north of the club - though of course if you prefer to camp that's fine. I did e-mail you (and Roger) with this offer but perhaps it didn't get through. E-mail me on mj.supernova@tiscali.co.uk or ring 023 92 413462 if interested.

Did any Buzzes go to Langstone? How was it?

We couldn't make it in the end because Peter couldn't get the Saturday off work.

Dear Annie,
Here's an earlie report.
Langstone Asymmetric Open 2005.

Buzz Results

Author: Caroline Alexander

Saturday morning brought a fleet of 9 Buzzes together with an over cast day, wind force 5-6 steadily increasing.

Launching was the first challenge. A very strong tide, head wind and a line of concrete piers to avoid meant just getting out into the harbour was every helms nightmare.

With the fleet scattered by the wind race 1 started more or less on time. Unfortunately the author didn’t start the first race as we managed to break our boom and had to retire With a quick trip to Rooster Sailing we managed to purchase a new boom and arrived back on the water with five minutes to spare for the start of race 2.

It was truly survival conditions and just to finish was an achievement. The results for the two races were very mixed, race 1 had only five finishing boats with the home team of Mike Ford and Richard Powell finishing first, Neil and Cath Mant from Thorney Island a well earned second.

Race 2 saw a good start from Dough Horner and Caroline Alexander, with Mike Ford and Richard Powell hard on their heels. Positions changed rounding the first windward mark, many boats had an early bath as they tried to launch their spinnakers or attempting their first jibe.

Unfortunately the author was also trying to survive and could not improve her position, but she can safely say that most people swam as she managed to count four up-turned buzzes at the leeward mark. It was all about DAMAGE LIMITATIONS! The results for the race 2 were a well earned first for Stuart Bailey and Hannah Packman, Medway Yatch Club, and a second for Mike and Tom Trueman, Oxford Sailing Club.

The race officer then decided to stop racing, giving battered crews and boats a chance to recover for the following day.

Sunday morning saw a bright sunny day, the wind had dropped to a force 3-4 and switched to the north. This meant the race officer had to change the course completely from the previous day. Launching was safer through the concrete piers and the racing got off to a good start.

There were three laps for race 3 and as the wind conditions moderated the racing became very closely matched. A good win for Gary and Stephen Aiken from Hillhead sailing club and a close second for Douglas Horner and Caroline Alexander, which left Ford and Powell in third.

A quick turn round and race 4 got under way, Horner and Alexander lead for the first lap but made a tactical error at the second windward mark which dropped them back to fourth, leaving the field wide open to Aiken, Ford and Bailey to battle it out over the last lap and a half. Bailey and Packman took the win with the Aikens' team finishing second.

Again a very quick turn round for race 5, the fleet getting off to yet another good start. The wind had died to a steady three with significant wind holes. Course management was essential if boats were to secure an advantage. The racing was closer than ever, with some very good tactics from the Aiken team that eventually brought them another win. Jane Noble and Mark Wilson from Lanstone taking a well deserved second place and Horner and Alexander in third.

The results for the five races were a first to Gary and Stephen Aiken, second went to Mike Ford and Richard Powell and third place went to Stuart Bailey and Hannah Packman. Yes, you guessed it Dough Horner and Caroline Alexander took fourth position with the privilege of writing the report!

A great big thank you to the Lanstone Sailing Club for hosting a well organised event in difficult weather condition.
