Hi All
Me again, got over the spinnaker doubts now on to the jib.
I note that in the Topper book of destructions they refer to a sheeting arrangement with a double purchase, how many of you out there actually use this ? Our boat came without it but as my crew is quite small she would appreciate some help in getting the jib tight so am considering it but will it just add to the considerable knitting in that area of the boat.

Hi Jan

I use the double purchase systems and my crews seems to cope with it. Can be unhelpful when rigging, but if your crew needs the extra help then try it. I wouldn't expect it to cause any added knitting but im not sure how other people get on. Hope that is of some use.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the reply, what arrangement do you have ?
A double block on the jib clew or two short strops with single blocks ? this would reduce the amount of jib sheet required.
I am doing away with a double block on the mainsheet anyway.

Yeah i have the double block on the jib. Continuious sheet. Seems to work ok most of the time. How is your mainsheet arranged at the moment before you get rid of the double block??

Hi Dave
There is a double block on the mainsheet bridle which gives a mechanical advantage of 5 sounds fine but makes moving the boom too slow and insensitive, if I need that much purchase its too windy.
I will remove the block and becket from the boom and replace it with a single block, then put the block and becket on the bridle. This frees the double block for the jib, the system then becomes identical to the Buzz one .
How do you anchor the ends of the jibsheets ? Do you use blocks with beckets there ?

There has been discussion in the past about changing the mainsheet system as many feel there might be a better way. One of the problems i think was to much purchase so if you solved then all for better mainsheet control. I do stand to be corrected there though.
Not sure if my jib sheets are set up correctly, but one end is tied in the jib track runner. Goes up to the jib clew double block and back to the block on the jib track, through the cleat and over to the other cleat to end up back tied on the runner again. Haven't seen it for a while so hope my memory is good! One thing i never managed to solve was do the sheets go over or under the kite sheets?!!

Dave

Hi Dave
Thanks again for your input.
Doesn't look like we are going to get out this weekend, heavy rain and plus 30mph winds are too much for us wimps, so can't check out the spinnaker sheeting arrangements. But would have thought the sheet should be over the top of the jib sheets as when things get very exciting crew will be far aft and unimpeded spinnaker sheeting will be a priority.

Heavy rain, enough to put me off! When did you buy your spice?

Hi Dave
Bought it at the end of September, its 345 . Believe it originated in Devon. We are down in Milford Haven, had a Buzz for several years so we thought we would know what to do, but there is a lot more power there. Its all about an old man wondering if he can master a twin trapeze boat before its too late.

Hi Jan,

We use two singles actually on the jib, you will find the lay better, Karen swears by it. We only go to single sheet in light winds, the advantage is it is quicker to sheet the jib in. I would not mess with the main sheet as you will find the purchase correct, your kicker should give you the necessary bend if you need it. If your boom appears low I would say you either have too much mast rake or the main is not going fully to the top of the mast. Rain & 30 mph sounds good enough for me to stay in doors.

Chris.
