Hi

I know I don't actually do anything towards planning events but seeing the debate on the Nationals I thought I would start a new topic where people could input thoughts on events.

For both Buzzes and ISOs numbers seem to be well down this year - obviously I am aware, particulalrly in the ISO fleet, there have been reasons why a number of the ususal top flight have not been racing (many moved on/lost crew etc) but what could be done to attract more boats to events? All the events I have done this year have been really well organsied and the people very friendly so it is a shame for more not to be enjoying them.

Thoughts on location, timing, cost, accomodation, food or anything would be welcome.

To kick it off I think it would be good to have a three day Nationals and possible would suggest Torbay again (advantage is this is minimum input from event organiser as it is tagging onto an existing well-organised event (and also therefore less embarassment if only a few boats show than if a special event is organised) - downside is travelling down to Devon on a BH weekend, no very local camping (though fairly cheep B&Bs, and the fleets do get a bit separated socially as the club-house was a bit small to fit everyone in which is less friendly for new comers.

Over to you....
Jane

I think we all make a concerted effort to go to Italy next year for on big bumper event and just organise a few select national events in the UK where we try and encourage as many to come along as possible. Lets then target the newbies who don't travel for these events. This would not preclude us from having a few local events, such as Essex where they have a strong local fleet.

The Italian fleet have their Nationals, why don't we arrange a Eurocup the straight after it so the british boats can do both and make the travel more worth while. I know Other fleets have done this in the past.

If we were to organise this for next year and give pleanty of notice I am sure we could easily get 30+ ISO's including the Italians and make this a truly international event as it should appeal to the other euro boats too.

If then we organise a UK nationals earlier in the year (May BH) that is appealing for the Italian fleet maybe they will come to uk for that event too?

We have been talking in Committee about running a full open next year for ISO's.If numbers are looking to be less then it would be possible to have the Buzz fleet as the same time.
As for timing, then it could be run in late May, to have a 3 day event.
you could call it the Nationals if you wanted, but with Calshot's record of wind it could well be a non starter any way !!!!

We at the Essex Yacht Club, on the tidal north bank of the Thames, have already indicated our willingness to host an event next year as this year's trial event was deemed to be very successful. We have 8 local boats including many circuit racers, and more by then possibly. The Club is unusual being on a former minesweeper. We need to maximise the water by choosing dates with high tides.
