In order to produce a carbon kite pole, someone can give the right measure of kite pole?
length, diameter and thickness,(could be useful to have the carbon pole thickness now is using)
Ciao Paolo

I don't have the measurements with me right now but I think the standard pole is 62mm od with a wall of 2mm. I better check before you use those figs though.

I am currently making a pole (to experiment with) out of a windsurfer mast I had lying around. I think It is glass rather than Carbon but it used to bend a terrific amount in its former life so I don't think it will break... maybe it will be to bendy I don't know. Anyway it is approx 54mm tapered to about 42mm with about the same 2mm wall.
i got some plastic plugs that fit snugly and filled them with a good dollop of P40 glass paste to beef them up a bit. I glued in some SS lined through-deck eyes to let the tack line run.
It is much much lighter than the heavy ally one.

Will let you know how it goes

Colin

I think that we should go for a diameter of approx 40 mm, using some plastic plugs as Colin suggest to avoid the pole moving.
With the plugs properly glued we would possibly prevent leaks that allow the water to enter in the hull.

Unfortunately the hole in the bow will dictate the size of the pole Marco. If the pole is to narrow, then it will rattle around and water will flood into the boat.

My Idea would be to fill the hole with Nylon Plugs or something similar...
so that the pole will work on the nylon and not on the fiberglass of the hull anymore...
this should reduce the risk of water entering between the internal and the external hulls.

We will try a proof of concept in the next weeks and send you photos/description once done...

Actually, the plugs I was referring to are to go in the ends of the pole.

However, I have also been looking at making a launching tube as Marco is suggesting.
Unfortunately british drainpipes are either 68mm or 50mm which are too big/small for my adapted pole. So looks like I will have to cut and reduce a 68mm one and wrap with glass tape.

You shouldn't have a problem with a leak around the pole hole - although it has been known.

If you do, the fixed which Pete published ages ago, is to dig out some of the adhesive between the deck and hull in the hole - only needs about 5mm in the centre and refill with glass fibre or gel coat. Easy to do and lasts for ages if you ensure everythig is really dry when you do it.

But do carry on testing alternatives - progress is made that way

It must be my age,I forgot I had a carbon pole about 10 years ago.
It was a old 14 pole cut down to more or less the same as the standard one. When it was out the taper was the same size as the hole in the boat.I put in a sheave on the tack end, this gave less friction then the nylon plug in the end. I will see if it is still around, it was left behind with my ex. I took it off when I was protested by the Hornet sailors for beating them, they said it gave me an advantage.

I have been experimenting with a bowsprit made from an old windsurfer mast. Basically - i loved it.

The feel of the boat is much smoother downwind. it is like having suspension. All the snatching of gusts is gone - the pole bends to take out the impact of the gust and power up the sail and off you go... down.
Also it seems to lift the bow in a more positive way. I.e. the boat feels like it is flying over the waves.... but not digging the stern like it does when you move weight back.

Unfortunately I broke it trying to go too high with Andrew on the wire and using Nik's oversize Hyde (he bought the big prototype spinny). but I will repair it with strenghening around the pole exit point. (it broke at the obvious point of stress). It was horrible going back to the clanky old rigid metal drainpipe.

I didn't notice any problems with more water coming in the hole or with the pole rattling around (normal pole 62mm, new pole tapers from approx 54mm to 42mm so a lot of space around the hole). However, this was all on fairly flat water. It may be worse in waves more than .5m.
