Dear all, now having been informed that the Spice main was virtually indestructable I have a rip approximately 30 cm long along the part of the sail that meets the top batton. Is this kind of thing repairable? Or do I have to go down the insurance line? Anyone know of any good sail repairers in Kent?

By the way it was absolutely manic sailing, I had brown pants!

try your luck with the insurance first a new sail is always worth a go, my old sail looks like a patch work quilt but still goes ok.

Pulled off a deft swan dive through my spice main last summer, which resulted in a tear from the foot to the first batten pocket. We had our sail repaired for the princely sum of 150 quid. The thing to keep in mind is the excess on your policy (ours was 80 quid) and that most things are repairable as far as mylar sails go -it's got to be a fairly severe tear before the insurance company will fork out for a replacement. If your sail is more than three years old, most insurance companies will pay out a fraction of the price of a new sail -in our case, they were willing to comtribute 2/3 of the 625 needed. I would give the insurance company a call to find out their opinion, but they will most likely ask you to wander along to a local sail loft, who will give you an idea of the price of any work. Going rate in Hampshire seems to be £40/hour plus materials.

we have trashed three mains and have had two new ones out of the insurance, what with falling through one and a disagrement with a fence post on the bank with another, lets face it the sails are not designed to be full of repairs and will slow you down.£625 seems a little steep for a new main, did you try wet and windy?

That was wet and windy. When you ring them up, they point out that the price on the website is no longer correct.

thanks for all your replies, will be going to northrope at the weekend, I know patching the sail isn't great but 625 for a new one is a tad expensive! I will invest in a new one after this season!
