Hi Greg,
GOOD question! and Welcome to Soton.
I work in ECS (electronics and comp science) dept.
I used to sail at Weston, which is on Southampton water and is a good racing club - there weren't any other iso's but they do have an assymetric start. I moved to Langstone (about half hour drive from soton) for cost reasons because i have other boats there and couldn't afford 2 sets of fees, but also because at the time there were 10 other iso's there. This has now declined to 5 ISO's incl. mine. None of us 5 have been very active recently but I am keen to get going again and the club is currently trying to find ways of re-juvenating the racing. There are also some a little further along the coast at Emsworth I believe I will be watching for any other replies with interest!
If you want to get in contact my email is cfs at ecs. soton. ac. uk

Colin,
What's the sailing like at Langstone, would it be a good place to hold an ISO open.

I'm not a comittee member so can't say whether LSC would want to hold an open or not, but they do host some smallish ones (L2000 I think). Obviously, I would be v keen. LSC is next to the bridge to Hayling Island. There is a good expanse of open water on the Langstone harbour side (perhaps 1/2 mile by 1 mile). This is right next to the club and better than Langstone Harbour itself which is mostly quite shallow. Plenty of water for an ISO open of 20ish boats I'd say. Tide is a bit restricting - we tend to keep within HT+/-2hrs. Although I think you can launch up to +/-4hrs. (The chichester harbour side is all channels through the mud so not really suitable until you get down near the harbour entrance).
The club is quite small, but we have recently cleared the dinghy park so there is reasonable amount of room for boats (while the cruisers are in the water - the club is half cruisers and half dinghy). Access is easy being at the end of the A3/M27. You will be able to see the original Portsmouth Yardstick which was invented by a former member. I will try to sound out the Commitee and other ISO's.
Colin

Hi

We have 9 ISO's at Emsworth Slipper, plus 2 very good ISO sailors - Ex Eurocup / Nat Champ !
However unfortunately we have a 3 year waiting list !
Having said that we do have some Open meetings - the next is not until 28 December but there will be most of the ISO's out !

Langstone is a good club and has had several past ISO sailors, and its just around the corner from us, and there are plenty of good Chi Harbour regattas !

As for an Open for iSO's we are discussing but we're locked by tides and sail area ! Maybe, just maybe ??? watch this space ?

Cheers

I think it would be great to hold an ISO open at one of those clubs, particularly as there are so many members around there. The only problem I have is never having been there. However, if there's anything I can do, as ISO event organiser, to make something happen, please let me know. My email address is steve@stephenrbell.com
