ok time to stop lurking...

I'm looking for some help and advice; A group of us have been sailing yachts for around the last 5-8 years or so and enjoy it a lot however as we've got older and started to settle down with careers and families our time on yachts has dwindled to a week a year in the Med.

Whilst in Turkey this year we were passed by what looked at first glance like 2 complete maniacs flat out on some form of dinghy ... it was blowing a 6 at the time and these guys must have been doing around 25knots!

That did it for us! we'd found our new home! now all we needed was to find a boat, somewhere "safe" we could have a practice run, and some people to laugh at us...

Ok, the Boat... we've done our research, worked out budgets, studied the movie, and settled on the Boss! Before we buy one though, we could really do with some serious advice and tips; the sort of stuff we'd pass on to people if they were looking for a yacht.

Sailing wise we've found some tame sailing clubs near us that have decent stretches of inland waters we can learn on, and we're not very far from the South Coast (Shoreham, Chichester etc) for coastal race days. 2 of us are booking ourselves onto the RYA dinghy sailing and kite courses (the other 2 are planning on learning "on the job")

so over to you guys...

PS : there is storage space for a case of beer on one of these, right?

Well, you've come to the right place. You should be able to find yourself a good boat for little outlay, and have a lot of fun. There are one or two good ones over in the classified section. If you want to have a go first, then we are based at Shoreham on the South Coast and there are also some mad Boss people at Datchet so I am sure something can be organised.
Regarding beer stowage, the crate gets in the way, but you can lasso tape all the bottles/cans to the space frame to distribute the weight a bit better.......

Hi Pork Pie

I've checked the classifieds and it seems to have lots of old for sale posts plus a few "is it still for sale" replies, nothing new though. I check it everyday just incase I'm also checking a few of the other sites out there incase one comes up there.

I think we've chosen Wierwood as our inland club due to size, handiness from our houses etc, just whilst we get used to sailing these things... Dinghy courses are booked for September including spinnaker and performance sailing so hopefully by the time the water gets really cold we'll be all set! Can't wait to do our first man-overboard in less than 30 degrees celcius! my god! we must be mad!

I was thinking of popping down to Shoreham... I'm away in the States next week but back at the end of the month. Can I PM you on here to sort out times/dates etc?

cheers

Do I take it that you are thinking of sailing a Boss on Weirwood?

IMHO you will probably find Weirwood unsuitable for the Boss. Whilst it is a great sailing club (I was a member for about 20 years). It is a little small for the Boss and with the trees on the bank giving variable winds will make for a serious challenge to master the Boss.

I still live relatively close to Weirwood but have opted to travel to Shoreham to sail both the ISO and Boss.
Plus the sea is warmer than the lake and doesn't run out of water in the summer.

Come and join us at Shoreham! The more the merrier.

Hi Mike

well that was the plan for starters. We are planning to get into racing her but having become accustomed to 40 footers we figured that 'Plan A' would be to find somewhere nice, safe, and gentle to learn on... hence Weirwood... oh and it's about a 10 minute drive for most of us which means we can get out quite a lot whilst we're learning. Shoreham on the other hand will be about 45 minutes to an hour each way which will be very restrictive for those of us with families who don't sail, hate the water, moan everytime we mention boats...

Saying that, Shoreham is looking like the preferred choice for next year though as we all live in the Gatwick area...

What part of Gatwick area? I'm Copthorne and it takes me just 5 min extra to get to Shoreham instead of Wierwood.

PM me sometime and we'll try to arrange a visit to Shoreham.

I'm in Ifield, the other main guy lives in Horley, and the rest of the "crew" are in Reigate, Clapham, and Bournemouth

I'm away next week but how about I/we pop down to Shoreham the week after? evenings or weekends best for you? we'll then have a better idea on distance/time, and also the other benefits of joining Shoreham...

I'll PM you when I'm back

thanks for the advice by the way
