After la Rochelle we finally got on the water again... We learned about kicker tension.... That worked really good... quite gusty weather.... (relatively)better control and a lot of fun (no waves). The boom was a bit banana shaped, one curve at the kicker and the next (!!?) curve at the main sheet. We noticed it but were not alarmed... In a gybe the boom just snapped into pieces (at the outer main strop position). It seems that the crack started at one nail holes...
What to do now.... I just had a discussion about repairing the tube with an external sock of about 30 cm glued together... It is said to be as strong as new (and much cheaper) Has anyone done it before??
go for carbon? is there a second hand market for alu booms (everyone is going for carbon or just go to the steel market and buy an alu tube same size (76 mm)?? IS carbon also easy to get in the after market?
Just let me know.. h dot smorenburg at home dot nl

We bought a plain tube at optiparts... 100 pounds no shippingcosts.. International shipping costs are 90 pounds plus cost of a boom This seems the cheapest and fastest way of getting back on the water... Optiparts says it is the same quality as the proctor tubes... They use it for the big spinnakerpoles... The old boom got rotten on the nails of the main sheet blocks.. so this one just strops... kept in place with a line from end to end...

Good move Hans ! Pleased to hear you are back on the water at reasonable cost - and Class legal too. We allowed the purchase of a tube and fit it out yourself earlier this year - if anyone hadn't noticed.... |
