I have managed to crack another rudder blade for about the fourth or fifth time the new ones are rubbish, have had three all are the same not bonded properly i think. Is there any thing I could be doing wrong to cause this. Does anyone else have problems.

Hi

We are on our fourth rudder, and the last one was definitely rubbish build - we had it checked by a specialist at Southampton Uni !
We were sailing in a F5-6, flat out going upwind and bang !

It could be that the rudder under pressure moves backwards about 10mm and the load increase is too much. Solving now with some stainless inserts in the slot that adjust the rudder in the tiller casting. Mike L - ISO 815 recommends and does Andy Gould - ex Euro Champ. Also we will be tieing our rudder down aswell.

However for £300, Topper should be checking the build a little but better - Come on guys ! Our insurance keeps taking a battering !! and theyre not happy !

Cheers

David

I never got on with the spring latchy thing so when I first got the boat I drilled a hole through the tiller casting and stock and put a stainless split pin through so it can't move. I have also filled the slots in the tiller casting with chemical metal to stop it adjusting itself.

Folks - anybody breaks anything please get the details to Mike Perry as Technical Committee Chairman.

We are in active discussion with Topper - see postings in July - about rudders and other key aspects.

We need :-

Photos
e-mail or letter telling us clearly how it happened
age of the item concerned - ideally confirmed with an invoice copy

If we have hard fact then we can have a meaningful discussion - and Topper then have a sound basis on which to investigate and take corrective action in conjunction with MikeP and team.
