As some of you will know, we've been trying for ages to set up a comparative boat review of the Boss and Laser 5K for Dinghy Sailing Magazine (DSM). It finally happened last weekend at Shoreham, and a very nice day we had too. There was a slight sea running, and just enough wind to twin wire. We sailed alongside each other, then swapped boats: DSM took a lot of pix afloat and ashore, then tape-recorded our impressions of the two boats.

Speed-wise, there was very little difference upwind (5K maybe very slightly faster, but essentially it was level boat-on-boat racing). The Boss was clearly pulling away downwind, whoever was sailing it. We think it came out as the better boat (and the Laser guys admitted to liking it too - especially the amount of room in the boat and the proper masthead kite. And not having to stuff it into a bag. Oh, and not being so heavy). In fairness, the 5K felt as though it would be quite decent in a real blow upwind, and probably behaves well in waves. But the key point really is that either of them gives you a huge amount of boat for the money. So I don't think we need concentrate on knocking the 5-tonner (oops, there I go). It would be worth seeing if we can try to get some of both classes to more open asymmetric events.

I've not yet seen what the write-up looks like, and it will be at least a couple of months before it goes out. But I think that it will be a good bit of publicity for the class.

PS And I dropped John in the water about 2 minutes after leaving the harbour. All in all, a very worthwhile day.

So that was the tsunami report while we were all enjoying La Rochelle

We've also done an ISO / L4k comparison for DSM - report around October issue I understand.

Think it would be great to have a "big boat" start at our events. How about using your new found 5 tonner contacts to get them along to the next events - along with all those BOSS' that are keen and eager to show how a mast head kite behaves ??
