Hello,

I need to do some repair work. My buzz got scratched on a windy day.
Some scratches are deep, some are hardly visible.
Any advice? I have once read a topic on gelcoats, any experience?
My sail number is 465. The hull has the typical grey/white colour.
I have asked wet and windy, but no reply?

Tom

Tom,

Plastic padding Gelcoat filler is very good but only comes in a very bright white which will obviously not match the hull. I use this underneath where the finish is more important than the colour match. There is a make of gelcoat filler that does various different colours including a few variations of white, as your hull is all one colour i think this is probably the best for you as one of the shades should match fairly well. It is more expensive that plastic paddings filler but it will be a better job. The problem is i don't remember who makes it, it comes in a dark blue packet i think. When passing my local chandlery next i'll try and find out for you.

Hope that helps. . .

Will we be seeing you at the Nationals??

Stuart.

Stuart,

If you could check for the make sometime, that would be great!
There’s a gelcoat on the wet-and-windy site “gelcoat(topper) grey” (under sailing dinghy/ buzz/spares/repair). Perhaps that’s the colour I’m looking for?
Can’t make it to the nationals this year because of exams at the end of the month. It would be nice to come to Britain again. It has been a year since we came over and bought ourselves a buzz!!
Never been at a buzz event before, no doubt it would be quite an experience for us!

Tom

Tom, phone 'Wet-Windy' to see if they have got the colours you want. Many early colours where produced by Cray Valley but Topper are now buying gelcoat from Scott Bader and the colours are slightly different. It has a limted shelf life so it could be a problem. I'd planned to phone Cray to see what the options are. If you come to the nationals I'll show you how to fix it. Sound like some will rub out, others will need filling.

Tom,

for the clour you can probably mix together white and grey to obtain the right one. Somebody also adds some drop of black paint to white gelcoat, but I think if you find the two colours is better.

I also have travelled to Britain to get my Buzz, hope to see you at Eurocup next year! Are there many buzzes in Belgium?

Chris, Thanks for this information. Guess my best option would be to contact Cray Valley.
I have searched the web, but can’t find their e-mail or phone number.
Don’t really understand what you mean with “rubbing out”. Do you mean I can just rub out a small scratch using a gel coat?(Beginner’s question, sorry)

Paolo moncia, thanks for the idea. We have planned to come to Italy next year! Perhaps I can schedule my vacation to be in the same week as the Eurocup. My brother(surfer) just got back from Garda (third year he’s been there). He told me there’s lot’s of sun, wind and plenty of buzz and iso. Seems like the perfect spot to me!
No there aren’t many Buzzes in Belgium. As far as I know, there are only 3 boats.
There is Buzz 405 which is owned by our sailing school. There’s the buzz of Roofingbrander(don’t know his number, but he posts something on this forum from time to time) and last but not least there’s my shiny buzz 465.

Tom,

also in Italy there are few Buzzes. Apart from mine (452), I only know of another one. I am not sure Eurocup will be in Italy next year, if it is, come that week, if not, go to Eurocup wherever it is.

Let me know how you go on with the repair, I think also my boat wil need the same shade of very light gray soon!

Paolo

I used the normal bright white gel coat filler from plastic padding, and mixed in a very small amount of charcoal gel coat (comes in a tin) from LDC. Gets it near enough if you spend a little time mixing and comparing colours before you add the standard plastic padding hardener.

Hi Tom,

My ISO is white on the outside and light grey on the inside, I bought gel coat from Wet&Windy, and the grey is a perfect match ( the boat is abot ten years old ). I would think that the Buzz is going to be the same shade - worth a try for £3-50 - it comes in what looks like a 35mm film canister, just apply with a fine brush when it isn't too cold, and make sure that you have some thinners / acetone on hand to salvage the brush.

Cheers
