can anyone recommend a good harness for the ISO - a mate mentioned something about a newer type with a release mechanism?

sorry I'm a bit clueless on trapeze stuff at the moment - any advice no matter how obvious it might seem would be more than welcome.

From 1st January 2006 all crews will need :-

ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing and Equipment Rules Of Sailing 2005-2008 Publications available Online, key change for trapeze harness users with new rule -

“40.2 A trapeze or hiking harness shall have a device capable of quickly releasing the competitor from the boat at all times while in use.”

I'm sure there are some crews with some views ( ! ) - but talk to a good chandler like Wet&Windy, Northampton Sailboats or direct to Sea Sure or Magic Marine. There are several others on the market. Get to try one on - the fit is different and hence personal preferences.

Hi Bob,
I recall reading in Y&Y that this rule is being questioned and may not be introduced on 1/1/2006 after all. Or has there been a further development? Probably still a good idea to investigate a quick releasing hook harness if you have to get one anyway.

From 2005 ISAF Mid-Year Meeting, May 2005

RRS 40.2 Quick Release Harness

RRS 40.2 Quick Release Harness is scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2006. However, concerns have been raised on the need to establish standards so that sailors know exactly what equipment fits within the rule and a three-pronged approach has been taken:That

1. ISAF proceed as quickly as possible to obtain an international standard for trapeze and hiking harnesses
2. That ISAF undertake a programme to alert sailors to the dangers of entrapment by harnesses and ways to reduce the risk of entrapment.
3. That the Equipment Committee and the Racing Rules Committee review the current wording of RRS 40.2 and consider making a submission to modify or rescind that rule or defer its effective date.

so what brand/model do you guys use at the moment then - and how do you rate it? - would you swap it for something better?

is "harness entrapment" a real problem or just a hypothetical one?

I can see how you wouldn't want to be dragged under if your harness failed to release - but has anyone got any first hand experience of harnesses putting you in danger?

Hi,
Currently use a Banks Skiff Pro http://www.sailgb.com/p/banks_skiff_pro_sailing_dinghy_trapeze_harnes
s/

Non adjustable so don't put on weight, but has the advantage of no straps or buckle to get in the way or come undone. I bought mine at the Dinghy Show with an RWO QRH quick release system. Get along to an open meeting and talk to people and see what harnesses they use and try them on, it needs to be comfortable.

Try Andy at Wet and Windy, he is good for advice and can get most things, mention that you are a ISO Class Association member and you may get some discount.

Hello!
I am currently using a GUL Thermo Pro Harness, with a RWO quick relese hook.
With the GUL harness you do not have to undo any stictin to fit the QRH, just undo a few straps, worth considering before buying. Take a look at the boat show!
