Hi
I have been talking with a local sail maker in Westbourne, West Sussex. Here is his website:
http://www.dynamicsails.com/

He could make a similar shape to the existing or a more modern cut with a fuller head both in a laminate material - perhaps Pemtex. It would be more see through like the Hydes for the Buzz but a stronger material.

The main would be £680 for Pemtex and £850 for a Kevlar version.
The jib could be made with the same material and would be between £250 and £300. A fold on the leach to create a hollow would be a cheaper option than adding vertical battens like the buzz hydes the latter option would add about £30.

If there was sufficient interest then he may be able to reduce the costs.

Hi

I contacted Sail Register last June 2010, aparently they have patterns for Spice sails, back then they could do a dacron main and jib for £645 or a mylar main/dacron jib for £745.

Just a thought though from a budget conscious Spice sailor. Given that there's no class racing for the Spice anywhere in the country that I'm aware of, if as a class we were to adopt the ISO main and jib (any vintage/maker), as an alternative to the original sails we would have a source of used sails at sensible prices. The main is virtually the same size as Spice and the jib very slightly smaller. If we adopted this as a class maybe we could then use ISO sails at handicap events (we may then have to revise the handicap number). With a suit of new sails exceeding the value of an otherwise decent boat this may keep a few more Spice's on the water.

I bought an out of class North ISO main and Sobstad jib for £225 last autumn in very good condition (so I could preserve my one decent main and jib for racing), they seem to work well on the Spice, I suspect a fraction less rake would compensate for the smaller jib but I haven't tried that yet as the boat balances well with the old settings.

If we go for this that just leaves the kite (the ISO kite is a wimpy 18M2), any suggestions (Cherub and RS80 both have 21M2 kites)?

Thanks for this Sam.

I find the Hydes great for visibility on our Buzz. They are at the cheaper end of the laminates and the ISOs, especially, have had trouble with the leach of the jib wearing quickly. Dynaimic sails suggest that Pemtex is stronger - therefore a trade off between price and longevity.

I had a chat with Rooster who are doing ISO sails. They are a white opaque laminate. They could do a larger window for the Spice. The Rooster jib luff has a large strip of black reinforcement.

In some ways I like the fact that Dynamic sails are British made rather than far east imports. Your North sails sound a bargain!
