Hello,

We are new to the Boss class. We were having a look at the recent National entries over the past couple of years, ending in 2 boats this year.

We know of 3 boats . . which is a start . . who would be entering in '07. I understand that the ISO fleet kindly offered to hold it at their nationals at Herne Bay.

Although this is a very kind offer, can we not find a venue for our own national. If i can raise 3 boats, i'm sure that there are many other keen Boss sailors who are interested???

If anyone has any thoughts on venue's, or who are interested in getting a good group of Boss sailors together for a good weekend . . lots of drinking i hope?!

On closing there are 3-4 Boss going to Abersoch Dinghy Week, could it be incorporated into that?

Let me know your views (hope not stepping on anyone's toes).

Cheers,
Iain & Olly

I will def be at Abersoch Dinghy Week next year and am also interested in doing the nationals somewhere. Have to say Herne bay isn't my fav sailing venue ever but is good enough. I agree with Iain and suggest we organise to hold the nationals at any of the ISO/Buzz venues, or event within another event just like the L3000's did this year with Torbay Yatch Club Week.

I don't really mind venue wise - just where ever is going to get the best turn out!

Come on then others out there, Ben , John, etc... Where does everyone recon their most likely to make?

The BOSS' are welcome at any of the events. They've been organised with all 4 Classes in mind. More the merrier.

If you want to run your Nats at a venue that isn't billed as ISO / Buzz Nats then I don't see a problem with that either - a start line is a start line.

The 2007 calendar will be posted soon ( please Colin / Pete ) so keep an eye on that for dates and venues.

Plus you may want to watch out for European venues - there's a bunch of enthusiastic Belgians running a North European circuit - think Deidrik and Tasar Hans know them, several BOSS' involved. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested.

Sorry, I haven't been on the forum for a while so missed this discussion. Boss's would obviously be welcome as far as the ISO/Buzz class assocs are concerned but I think I would need to confirm whether the club involved is happy about it.

I mentioned the possibility of an extra start for Boss's to Herne Bay for the Nationals so that IS ok. However...

The Buzz event at Downs excluded ISO's for practical reasons (launching/depth etc) so same would apply to Boss.

I think Langstone might also have concerns about the amount/depth of water but I will check. How long is a Boss daggerboard, is it much more than an ISO?

There is also the question of whether a club would be able/willing to run another start. If not, are we all happy to have a combined ISO/Boss start?

A Boss daggerboard is around 1.6 metres long, so I guess we draw around 1.3 to 1.4 metres when afloat. I can't imagine that is a problem for most places

OK, let's summarise where we are on this one. We now have a date and a place for the Iso et al Nationals - Herne Bay on 25-27th August (the Bank Holiday). Personally, I think that this would be a good venue. I may be biassed as I grew up there, but I understand that the open meeting earlier this year went down very well. It's a good stretch of open water, but waves are seldom huge. Does require a slipway launch, but should be no big problem assuming the club provide a few helpers.

That said, if there are other ideas, let's put these in the pot as well. The overall aim must be to get a decent number of boats sailing together, especially with an encouraging number of newcomers. Abersoch was one suggestion earlier in this thread.

Another potential option: I have been approached by the Laser 5000 class, who would be quite keen to have some combined events (maybe also with the Cherubs). The 5-tonners and us are close enough in speed to have some decent boat-on-boat racing, though we could also extract separate results. We might try at least one or two combined events? Were we to do so, choices might include the Shoreham asymmetric event, and possibly the existing 5000 event scheduled for Weston on June 16/17th? That is their Nationals: it could be ours too, in principle, or just an open for us if we go to Herne Bay later.

How do people feel about these - or other - alternatives?

Hi, I know that I won't attend most events but anyway. I think it would be good to choose a mix. I feels good to keep on joining the ISO and other topper boats. But I think it would be good to team up with the 5k as well. Then there is more competition since the the Boss and the 5k are supposed to have the same speed on the water. I myself finds it more fun to race against, lets say, ten boats than against one or two. In that way we would combine the best of both worlds.

Hope to see you next year,

Diederik

Hi Boss's
I am contacting all the clubs we have ISO events with to see which ones are happy to accomodate Bosses. So far...

Langstone (co-hosted by Emsworth Slipper) cannot accomodate any further starts within the tide limits, so that one is out I'm afraid.

Good news from Broadstairs though. This event is now combined with ISO/L4K/L5K. They would be happy for the Bosses to share the L5K's start provided the L5Ks are happy about it.

I will post a full list of events v classes once I have all the responses.

Colin

The Broadstairs gig sounds like a good one, with two pairs of relatively evenly-matched classes. Good place to sail too! (when there's wind)

Hi Guys, after alot of banter on the Y&Y forum ive been looking into the Boss. With your only 2 boat nationals I come here to offer my help. I am a Cherub sailor - on the comitee and a long standing member. Now im buying a 12ft skiff, Started campaining a 49er with Jon Emmet, but had to flee back to the 12! - so thats me (slightly insane)! If you would like, if there is a spare boat out there my self and my crew would happily come along and race the national circuit with you to help get the numbers back up. If there are a few spare boats out there whos owners cant make the nationals for any reason, let me know and ill fill them!
Let me know what you think,
Andy

There's got to be some one out there who needs a helm/crew or even better still, an unused boat that Andy can use for the nationals???
