Hi

We need to buy a new spinnaker halliard as the old one is twisting badly and we have failed to make much difference by shaking (walking) the halliard out. We have been having difficulty both hoisting (when hoisting the last two metres the spinnaker goes into overdrive twisting like a whirling dervish) and dropping (knots/kinks appearing in the boat when trying to drop the spinnaker getting caught on everything possible – I think this was in part the reason for 3 trawls in 6 drops on the last day in the nationals!).

I have had a look through the web site and couldn’t see anything on the length/type of rope. I have come up with about 17.5m (I am not keen to completely de-rig it so I have the old one in place to follow when fitting the new halliard) can anyone confirm if this is about right please? Also can anyone tell me what type of rope I need – I want to buy over the internet as we are having difficulties getting to our local shop when it is open (obviously if going to the chandler I would take a bit with me so be assured of getting the correct type). Many thanks.

Jane and Mark

It's 18m in the documentation but I have a feeling 17m may be a better length, start with 18 and cut down to 17 if necessary. It's 5mm, 8 plait Polyester. This works well enough. I'd get the boat on it's side rather than using the old halyard as a feed to minimise twists. Get all the twists out you can before fitting. Use a halyard tidy, shock cord and a cheap block attached, to the rear toe strap mounting or loop round here and attach to the bridle deck eye. Length will need tweaking but it will help knotting problems at the up-haul and down-haul blocks.
