Hi, I amseriously thinking about buying a secondhand BOSS for my wife and I to sail together. Browsing this site, it is obvious that there have been some changes to the coat concerning the bow, spinnaker and jib. I would appreciate a synopsis of what these changes mean and what to look for in a secondhand boat.

Also, are there any general things to look out for when purchasing a BOSS?

Lastly, and cheekily, we would like to have a sail on one before we buy. Is there anyone between Weymouth and Exeter who we could ask?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Simon

The changes are as follows:-

1) New bow chute modification to allow the bigger kite to go through the hole. The jib tack is now on the bow, and there is no roller reefing

2) New larger genoa to adjust for the above. Old genoas cannot really be used, although I've seen people try, with the sheeting under the frame 8-)

3) Masthead kite - MUCH better than the old bag

4) Upper spreaders and cap shrouds, to support the above

Old (Carbospar) masts can be modified successfully to the new rig, but the new mast from Superspar is a different section. The old masts retain the Morrison wire arrangement, with the cap shrouds going to the end of the lower spreaders. With the new mast, the cap shrouds pass through the lower spreaders half-way along, before going down to the bottlescrew.

In order to accommodate a modified 'old' mast, the old main sail has to be re-cut, to remove a fair chunk of luff round. 'New' mains are cut for the new Superspar.

Don't be worried if you are offered a boat with a modified old mast - there's not much to choose between them, but obviously, when it comes round to getting a new main, I'm not sure how easy it will be to get Sobstad to make one.....

If you are offered a boat to the old spec., it will cost you around 1500 squid to get up to speed, and for that, you are not far short of buying a boat which is already modified.....

Last modification is transom sheeting for the main, but to be honest, if our boat wasn't already done when we bought it, we'd still have the hoop. It's nice to have something to lean against between races, and the speed difference is negligible

It's a buyer's market right now, and you should be able to pick up a bargain with the new rig from the Classified section, unless Chris780 has already been in touch.

We're based in Shoreham, which is obviously east of Weymouth, but if you want to make the trip, you can certainly have a go!

Simon,

I'm in Portsmouth if you need a boat to test. Send us an e-mail if you want to try it. Ours has the new mast, new kite, bow mod and new jib and the rear main sheet.

Nick,

I sail from Langstone SC just on the bridge accross to hayling on the Right Hand Side. If you could bring your boss down there we could actually get two bosses at the same sailing club MY GOD!!!
It would be great to have a twin boat.

It is really cheap to join and there is an amazing expanse of water in langstone harbour and if you feel like a challenge there is mud dodging in chichester. We have the best of both world either side of the bridge.

Are you doin FED WEEK in the boss. I will be there so that would be cool.

The website for the club is www.langstonesc.org.uk. It is a small club but you get a stupdly cheap pint of stella!

If you e-mail me with your details, I will give you a call.

Mike

EVERYONE!!!

My main halyard constantly jumps off the pulley at the top of the mast. Its driving me crazy. I have already put washers either side of it and put a huge bolt and nylock nut at the top. Any suggestions.

I am already using 5mm halyard.

I'm trying to understand what happens if the halyard comes off the pulley. Does it jam between the pulley and the cheeks? If so, adding washers either side is only going to make it worse. Are you using a 2-1 halyard system on the new style mast? If so, it's worth getting a ball-bearing wheel, and make sure it's a good fit in the top cage. If not, I would talk to Superspar about a new top cage. But I suppose it does depend on what vintage mast you've got
Hey, when is Fed Week. Maybe we can come along the coast too!

John

We have the new mast but with straight halyard, not 2:1.Maybe I will speak with Superspar re new cage.

If I remember rightly we put two big penny washers either side to try and create two solid walls either side, i dont know I will have t o have another look. Cheers anyway, it jumps off either side and does get caught between the block and cheek.

Fed Week is 16th-20th August. Check out HISC website for details. it is usually a fantastic week with socials every night especially thursday night, very messy. Sandy beaches warmish water what better can you ask!!!!!!!
