Following the postings by Tim & Bob I thought I's start a new thread to cover some of the obvious questions.

1 Eurocup event. This will take place over 5 days and consist of 10 races. Racing starts on 28th July & ends on 1st August. Provided the wind plays ball racing should not start before 12:30 each day.

The club will be open on 27th July for registration & scrutineering of boats. A welcome ceremony will be held at 7pm on 27th July.

Entry fee will be £ 115.00 or euro 155.00 up to 15th July; thereafter it will be £ 140.00 or euro 200.00.

The entry will inlclude some beer vouchers, free pasta after every race and a dinner with wine included on 31st August. Additional tickets can be bought for friends/relatives.

Notice of Race & entry form will be posted on their & our web sites next week.

2 Travel. The least costly route is Dover-Calais and Alternative Promotions a good source for tickets; their contact number is 01934 824138. It's best to travel at off-peak times for the keenest rates for car & trailer.

3 Route. A matter of personal preference. The way that incurs least tolls yet plenty of motorway is (assuming you start from Calais) through France, Belgium & Luxembourg and into Germany at Saarbrucken. A few non autobahn miles to the main road heading to Karlsruhe; then across towards Munich (but not that far) and into Austria heading to Innsbruck. Across the Brenner Pass and down to Rovoreto which is onlY about 30 minutes from Malcesine. Toll cost, including vignette in Austria (you get fined if you don't have one) is about £ 18.00.

Distance is around 875 kms and should take around 24 hours assuming regular stops and a sleep in the car.

If any of you have MS Mappoint I can send a route by e-mail or if not then go to http://www.viamichelin.com/ where you can plan a variety of routes. Last year it was about 19 hours driving with a double trailer.

The only issues are that there are limited sections of Autobahn where trailers are not allowed in the outside lane & the Autostrada in Italy also has a similar rule during certain hours.

4 Accomodation. Malcesine is a great place with plenty of good hotels & apartments. It's possible to walk from the town to the sailing club although I wouldn't recommend it. The club is in a locality called Navene about 3 or 4 kms from the town centre. Camping is also available although it can get very hot in the tents and the sites are generally close to the road. The following web site is a good place to start....and if you really want to know what it's going to be like take a look at the Malcesine webcam!

5 Spares. It's essential to ensure your trailer & lighting board are in good shape & the bearings sound; also ensure you take spare bulbs and a spare wheel/tyre with you.

As for the boat, take as much as you can. If you're limited on spares then give the boat a good check over before you leave paying particular attention to the shrouds, trapeze lines, mast, boom and rudder. These will be difficult to replace out there.

Hope this helps...keep a lookout for the Notice of Race and Entry Forms.

Just in case someone is interested....

If you plan to spend some more time in Italy after the Eurocup, you might like to know that my sailing club, UVM - located on top of Lake Maggiore, is organizing a race for August 15th. It is open to all boats (separate starts for keelboats, catamarans and dinghies). If you take the route trough Switzerland to go back home, the club is only a few km from the border and the Highway. Should anyone be interested, please contact me through this board or directly on Garda
