Just wondering, how much or what ajustments can be made to the mainsheet block to make it more user friendly? Is it just my block? On a windy day, what happens to the mainsheet,as mine draggs along trying to catch the fish and its not to good. And last, the rudder, jsut had to buy a replacement and there is no pin for keeping it locked down, any ideas?

Cheers David

Bit optimistic as well, but what about a self tacking jib??!!

Mainsheet - tie a bit of shock cord to the end of it and tie the other end of the shock cord to the middle of the boat near the jammer unit. Also loosely coil the slack and hold it in your tiller hand. Holding the slack in the back tiller hand, stops that annoying moment of the mainsheet wrapping round itself everytime you uncleat it. This works and I use it in my 700 as well as used it in the 5000 during the 2001 season.

Definitely sounds like a Spice training day / weekend looming!

Rudder pin alternative - try using a loop of elastic tied to the lower gudgeon and just long enough at full stretch to hook over the big nut on top of the tiller arm with the blade fully down.

I find it works very well and gives instant release when you come in at low tide through muddy waters and find you're touching bottom.

there was one other thing, the sail being pulled up the mast, i still havent found the best lubricant for the tight space at the top of the mast. it is most anoying and a few times have had to capzise it on the beach just to get the thing up. is there a secret oil or jelly or something?
thanks lots

Probably find that if you let the rig tension off, that will help. On the same idea, your batten tension could be too tight!
Also make sure all the battens are popped the same way when hoisting.
Maybe use a bit of prolube spray. Failing all that, your mast track is too narrow at the top!

A couple of possibles

The mast has been in the mud and bent a bit about the shroud fitting point. Sight up the mast and check the slot is parallel all the way. Not much you can do if it isn't - but at least you'll know.

Other thing to check is the plastic feeder at the feed point near the gooseneck. If that is missing or badly worn / damaged then that will give you a major problem in hoisting. New one is only about £2 - try W&W, Northampton or Superspars direct.

Another thing to check is your halyard diameter - I find 5mm jams 2/3 the way up but 4mm feeds just fine - on the ISO at least.

Some Pro-lube as Pete suggests will help what ever the cause.

David,
Did you check your halyard for wear as if it is starting to wear it will jam. We use to have problems but recently replaced our halyard and that improved it. The locking pins are availible from Topper at about £6.00, remember to use some bungee to tie round the tiller and the pin head to make sure it doesn't drop out when sailing. Did you try spraying some water detergent mixture on the sail luff tape, it will help lubricate it, or spray the track with pro lube as Pete says. The Spice doesn't have a plastic pre feeder in the mast but it does sound like a good idea, but we have never had a problem. Is your main sheet connected to your kicker line? Training weekend would be worth attending to sort out these little problems.

Chris.

the halyard is fine for wear, but i think it could be the 5mm instead of the 4mm so that is something i need to look into. the rudder pin is there already, but i have just had to buy a new stock without the correct hole so before i did any slight modification i was just checking this was still the best way to fix it. the mast does have a plastic feeder and i am not sure this is the problem. the mainsheet was connected to the kicker but that kicker system on my spice needs some serious attention as it is complete rubbish i am afraid to say, i did try the elastic but didnt get on with it so i will resort back to connecting it back to the kicker, training weekend would be a real good thing, nearly came to sheppy this weekend but wasnt orgainised enough and any other even i would concider attending would have to be later in the summer and i am not available till then, but sounds like a lot of fun
thanks all for your help and advice
