I race at a sailing club, that only sails handicap races. I am the only BUZZ in the fleet and can only compare my performance on corrected times. The current PY 1005 puts me in the lower half of the fleet, with consistent peformance against other boats. There are two possibilities, one my own performance and second the PY number. With regard to the PY number are there any other BUZZ's sailing handicap races and is a PY number of 1005 a good reflection on the boats performance. Help and comments welcome.

Hi,

On PY the Buzz is capable of winning races, but only if sailed well. It also depends on where you sail and what sort of boats you are racing against. Give me a bit more info and i'll try and tell you how you should be doing . . .

I sail on a river and feel that the rating is fairly accurate, which is good really because then when you get a good result you feel you've done well rather than just having a good rating. I used to have a blaze and won just about every race in that, which was nice, but it wasn't a reflection of my sailing ability (I'm not normally very competitive in single handed boats, it must say something about my crew!!).

Hi

Although we certainly wouldn't call ourselves expert we do OK on handicap - as Stuart says it does depend a bit on wind conditions, course sailed, other boat types and skill of other sailors competing. Saying that with correct boat set up (very important) and time practicing on the water (equally important) I would think most Buzz sailors should be able to regularly get into the top half of the fleet. Once you have the boat technique things like reading wind shifts, strategy and tactics (sailing the best course), being where the wind is etc are also important.

Where about in Hampshire are you?? If it would help you could come to Langstone SC and check out our boat set-up and/or come out sailing with us or we could possibly make it to your club and check out you boat.

Would it be useful if we organised a formal/informal training session in the south sometime??

Cheers

In my opinion, 1005 is fair for the Buzz. I usually sail on handicap here in Italy, and we usually do well, often winning races. It depends also on the ratings of the other boats... as far as my main competitors (470, lasers, L4K, ISO, 505) are concerned, the PY seems to work well for all, with final results reflecting the skills of the various teams and the fact that they raced well or not. Things can vary in varying wind strength... well, if a L4K starts planing and you just need a bit more wind, you'll end up losing, but adjusting the PY also for that would make it much less easy to use and much less enjoyable, I think.

So, if you feel that your sailing skills need a bit improvement, what I can strongly raccomand is to go to open events, you'll learn rapidly those little adjustments and tricks that can really boost your performance!

Hope to see you in Italy next year for the EuroCup!

Thanks for your comments, looks like my sailing techque requires working on.

I have just replaced the main sail with a new stye one, this was due to the cost effectiveness of repairing my old one. The boat feels more resposive but is critical to sail setting. Question: should I replace the jib so as to match the cut of the main?

I sail in a cub dominated by SOLO's, with other faster and slower boats. The PY ranges from MIRROR's through the RS600's. If intrested the race results are on our club website at www.seafarers-sailing-club.org.uk and can give more information than this reply can.

The coarses are generally small with a predomation of upwind/down legs and smaller sized legs usually on a fullish reach.

In reply to Jane and Mark formal/informal training would be welcome. I live in STUBBINGTON and the sailing club is between LEE ON SOLENT and HILL HEAD sailing clubs.

Many thanks and keep in touch

Mike.
