After mounting my rudder I noticed that it could go up and down about 1/2 a inch.
Is this normal ?
Should I do anything to avoid this behavior ?

Yes there is normally some movement of the rudder stock when fitted, this not particularly desirable. A sheave from an old block drilled out to the size of the pintle usually does the trick to keep the rudder swcure.

Ideally the two gudgeons (top and bottom) should be touching the top and bottom of the stock. The further apart the more sturdy the fitting. In this case though, some packing piece will help stop the rudder stock from moving up and down.

I have rudder pics. Will put them on an ISO Tweaks page sometime.

thanks both for your suggestions,
I'd put the packing below the lower gudgeon, is this correct ?

Yes.

Keeps the blade in the water.
