I have just bought a new jib and main from Elvstrom /Sobstad direct, original design of sail when made by Topper. Apparently they have four full sets of new sails left. They cost me approx £200 and £400 i think. I can check. But ring them and ask for Jeremy White 023 8045 6205. I have used the jib so far and it's great.

That might sound a good deal but it is not alot less than the new price of Hydes? (about 20% cheaper I think). If you want the old style Sobstad sails then fine, but I hope you are aware they are not class legal as Sobstad are no longer a licenced manufacturer.

I was led to believe (not sure if it was voted in and the 'Rules Regs & Specs' section of the class website doesn't show it in the rules, but....

If they were manufactured before 1st April 2007 then they are class legal.

HOWEVER....

As you bought them direct from Sobstad, they are not class legal even if they were made before 1st April 2007!!!!

Every piece of UNIQUE ISO EQUIPMENT (boat, spars, space frame, sails, foils...) HAS to be purchased through our licencee - Wet & Windy Company based in Bristol. http://www.wet-windy.co.uk

You said they were new, not second hand! The licencing rule only applies to the first sale, second hand items retain their original status if sold on.

I have been back to Sobstad and the sails were made last year. the actual cost was £366 the main and £230 for the jib including vat.
I am assued by them that they are all made to the original design. I have no idea if they are making any more all they said was that they have some in stock.

I hope that I have not unintentionally infringed some class rule, but i will be continuing to sail with them as I like them, and it would be a bit crazy that i can not replace the original sails with ones from the people that made them. Any way i doubt that my position at the back of the fleet will bother anyone too much anyway!

JHB - seems to me that although you've got some cheap(er) sails you've been inconvenienced (through no fault of your own) in that they're not class legal.

The other 'injured' party here is W & W in that as licensee they are the supplier of all our sails etc. So maybe if you wanted to race with class legal sails (and a clear conscience) you should cantact W & W and see if you can come to some sort of agreement...

Just an idea...

Jim.
