To all.

I have just been looking through the Boss website, now that I have a vested interest, and came upon the following article, which puts forward a very valid argument for widening the exposure of the class. I think that maybe the committee should consider the points made i.e. read ISO instead of Boss.

I wish that I had come across this article before, because I feel that it could go some way towards solving 2 issues that the ISO Assn has:

a. The class needs positive promotion to potential sailors/buyers in an environment where they can perceive the true attributes of the ISO.

b. Race venues are becoming more difficult to secure at the present turnout levels.

To combine with specific events as suggested e.g. Abersoch Week, Fed Week, etc (there are a number held regularly each year) then I feel that the 2 issues above would be largely addressed.

In addition to that these events would probably also be more family friendly events with varied socials and reasonable availability of accommodation.

As a class and Association, we need to make an effort to promote the BOSS beyond the Multi-gala circuit, where, in effect we have a 'closed shop', where owners / sailors of the ISO and BUZZ, have exposure to the BOSS and are more likely to remain with a Topper range. The BOSS needs to appeal to a much wider section of the sailing community if it is to improve its numbers and continue in the increasingly competitive high performance dinghy market.

The introduction of the RS800 and the slick marketing of RS / LDC means that we have to actively persuade potential new owners to purchase a BOSS, rather than a Laser 5000 or RS800. Neither the Class Association, nor Topper have the funds available to market the boat effectively. The most effective advertising tools we have are the boats themselves and the people who sail them, so it's up to us all to promote the class, and to try to persuade fellow club members to go BOSS.

In addition, we also need to attract people to the class by letting them see the boats in action, and offer the opportunity of taking them out for a spin. The ideal opportunity to demonstrate the boats both on the racecourse and off the beach are the summer race weeks, of which there are many. In addition to the Multi Gala events already programmed, that as many BOSSes as possible try to make it to Abersoch Dinghy Week.

Abersoch Dinghy week is arguably the ideal location for a family race week. At going to press we have a confirmed 3 boats, which will compete in the Fast Asymmetric Dinghy Class, won in 1999 by a BOSS. South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club hosts the event held July 23 - 28. The week consists of 1 race per day on the fantastic waters of Tremadoc Bay. There are plenty of Hotels, B&Bs and campsites, suitable for families or individuals alike. ”End QUOTE

Please can we have your comments / ideas on the above. We have a good boat with a thriving Class Assn we need to show off its appeal to the rest of the sailing community.

Refering to Abersoch, I suggested at the AGM that we go for our nationals there in 2007, but I think people shot me down. Abersoch dinghy week is excellent and as we all agreed, we should combine our gala events with these big open weeks. We only have to race for the weekend even if the big event is on for a week.

The entire thing is what we have said all along though. We need people out in the boats instead of buried in the weeds in the dinghy park / back garden. This promotes the boat on its own. I feel that there are a lot of active ISO sailors who read this board (not properly signing in and logging out so can't fully say how many), these people do sail / race at their club, but do not come to circuit events. They have their reasons, but these are a silent fleet of boats that we the committee would like to hear from.
We / I feel we are not doing enough, but maybe we are doing enough but people just don't, can't make it to the events where the committee see's their efforts paying off.

Would all active ISO sailors who don't come to events, speak up please? It is your class as well!

I will be just across the peninsular at Morfa Nefyn during Abersoch week, and will try to put in an appearance with 806.

I agree with Mike that Abersoch would make a fantastic venue for an event.
