Hi All,

Myself and a mate are considering purchasing an ISO at some point this summer/autumn. And we have a few questions that we would like to ask.

1: What is the ideal crew weight as our combined weight is aprox 150Kg

2: How competitive are the older boats (circa 600 Sail No)

3: Is the ISO suitable for racing on the sea ?

4: Are they a maintenance heavy boat or being plastic are they more forgiving.

5: How often do good 2nd hand sails become available as we probably would need a decent racing set at some point

And also are there any ISO racing in the NOrth East area that we could have a look at ?

Thanks In Advance

Kev

Hi Kev - here's some answers

1 150kg or so is spot on - the top 10 ( or more ) crews are about that weight

2 Take a look at the Results pages - the sail numbers speak for themselves

3 Sea sailing - again take a look at the Clubs on the results sheets - many are sailed at sea based clubs year round

4 Maintenance - depends entirely on how heavy handed you are - but for instance 814 is sailed most weekends of the year and the only thing that stops us is no wind, a F7+ and a 3 line whip on family things - so not much needed apart from standard TLC

5 Sails - best starting place is the ISO Classifieds section on this Board. Sometimes there is a bit of a rash of people selling used sails, other times nothing. As newbies I would recommend you get and sail what you buy until you really have got the max out of it then buy some new / 2nd hand ones - you will know how to check them out by then - and have met most of the fleet and know who to ask for an opinion.

North East based ISO's - yes there are. Suggest you get in touch with North & Midlands Rep, Paddy Allaway ( see Committee section for his e-mail address ) - he should be able to get you in touch, or know who to ask.

Look forward to seeing you guys at events - best way to learn, apart from the now legendary ISO training / coaching sessions by Pete Lindley. Best value anywhere on anything to do with sailing - it's where I started 4 years ago ..... ( and did I mention the results sheets ? )

The boat is just great and can comfortably beat L4000 over the water, as well as the occasional RS800. And as for the Class - we're nice too

Come and join us.

Bob

I cant really add anything towhat Bob said. I got mine about a year ago, and we've had bags of fun - mostly in handicap raing at our club. Petes training is A1.
