Hi chaps, still haven't got round to sailing the boat yet as I need to learn how to rig it so I can get some practise in it. The friend that used to crew with me has gone travelling for a year so any offers to come sailing with me would be welcomed, helm, crew, stand there and watch me capsize great! I am not female eye candy but I can certainly offer beers and grub in the clubhouse afterwards!

OK TC - no problem. But give us a clue - where abouts are you ??

Makes it a bit easier for us to get a local ISO sailor in touch with you.

Welcome to the fleet - look forward to seeing you at events.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob, I am based in Farnham in Surrey, I am not a member of any sailing club yet but have considered Calshot and Datchett (Datchett doesn't seem to be particularly friendly) but am willing to tow it anywhere really. Thanks for your help,

Tim

Tim,
Maybe you could come down to my club (Langstone SC) sometime and we could race/rig your boat/ go for a blast or whatever. It is fairly easy for you to get to as its at the southern end of the A3. email me on cfsnook (at) ntlworld . com

If you choose Calshot there are two or three ISOs there sailing regularly, so I hear. Take a look at the Committee pages and contact Mike Lillywhite - Southern Area Rep and this years Eurocup Champion based at Emmsworth Slipper along with 8 to 10 other very competitive ISOs. Drop him an e-mail - I'm certain he will help you.

We are sailing 814 at Datchet on Sundays from time to time - often away at events / other venues at this time of year but if you want to pick a date or two we'll see what we can do to match diaries. Not sure why Datchet came across as unfriendly as they've been very, very helpful during our sojurn from home club King George (due to building works).

Next opportunity to meet the fleet is Langstone Harbour 1st /2nd October - details in events section and on the Message Board. Make a point of coming along. As promoted elsewhere, it's one of the quickest ways of getting to grips with the boat, geetting a load of tips, ensuring it is set up correctly - and buy those beers you mentioned

See you soon

Bob

An excellent weekend at Langstone was had, thanks to a very patient and helpful Colin who turned my green garden ornament (ISO 575) into a very respectable looking ISO. Having not sailed any dinghy in 8 years, I took a lot on board including a hull full of Langstone Harbour on one or two occasions. Look forward to some more racing!

Well it was fun to have another ISO to play with and the capsize drill practise was useful! Also, to see what its like at the front of an ISO.

With lots of basic cleaning and rigging to do we didn’t have much time for fine tuning but I tried to set up the mast as per the website guidelines. I have a couple of queries resulting from this. Any comments would be useful.

On shroud hole 3 the rake was 7350 and hole 4 was 7250. I went for hole 3 as I guess it is better to have the power but I think when I did mine it was spot on 7300 on hole 3. Also there was not much room for the tensioner gear to get between mast and space frame (and depowering to hole 4 would make it difficult to get the tension on). With the swatcher right off, the mast seemed to be at least straight and maybe a little inverted below the spreaders. It didn’t seem quite right so I wonder if something else is amiss. I was going to check the spreader lengths and angle but didn’t get time.

One thing’s just occurred to me – what dia are the shrouds? I think I was using the lowest scale on the superspars tension meter (for 2.5mm dia) so maybe I didn’t have enough tension on if they are 3mm.

It is 3.5mm diameter.

7300 is the approx rake.

Chainplate hole position is irrelevant as they vary from boat to boat, so go with whatever gets you the required measurements.

Pull rig tension on without the swathcer on. If the mast is old and not bent (in a damaged way) then it may be soft and therefore when the tension is put on it bends. The spreaders need to be in the two most aft holes on the spreader bracket. The spreader tip plates need to be one hole clear.

Ok, thanks.
I was only putting on about 250lbs then. This should bring the rake down closer to 7300. (ok its approx but 50 mm out seemed a lot to me considering that raking by 100mm (one hole) seems to have a dramatic effect on depowering).
