Rob:
Is it true that there are plans to not have a Eurocup next year? If so can we have this confirmed as it will most likly raise the numbers for this year.

That's the bar talk at the moment - but I wouldn't describe it as "plans" just yet. It's an option for which the discussion has just been kicked off.

Another option is that we make a point of further combining our efforts with the Italian ISO fleet that Marco has done a simply wonderful job of getting going. If you haven't taken a look at the Italian web site then recomend that you do www.isoracing.it. The combined ISO / L4k event in Sardinia in a couple of weeks time looks superb - albeit expensive to get to.

1 let's have everyone's thoughts on how we should go forwards with a European summer event for 2008

2 Make this year at La Rochelle another great Eurocup event by coming along - you've all seen the very strongly positive comments from last year - and people going to take a 2nd bite of the fun

Anyone want help finding accomodation and ferries then - as always - just ask

Cheers

Plans for next year are already well under way. We are looking at the Italian lakes but not at Malcesine. I am told there should be 15+ Italian ISOs there. No more details as yet.

We gave it a try in Holland for this year.
We have mavellous racing sites... just near the ferry...
the main problem is that in Holland we can't get the organisation round in the middle of the summer hollidays... we had a window but was too close to the Nationals... When something can be done with the planning... we could give it another try

It is the organisation that also organizes the Medemblik Europeans etc...

The dutch alternative is a separate start at the dutch open skiff championship.. 29-9/30-9 this year...
49er/ 29er/ RS800/ Moth / Musto Skiff etc... the whole bunch (and very good sailing/ camping etc...)

Marco:
Hi, regarding EC 2008 I'm currently exploring several options, wich I like to share with the class.
There could be an option on every North Italy lake, my favourite would be still GARDA (maybe in front of Malcesine, in Campione).

there Could be also an option (discussed with the Laser 4000 class in Cagliari) to have a combined Eurocup (with 80+boats in total)
They are planning to have their EC in Garda (RIVA DEL GARDA), end of June.
Riva can host 100+ boats (tested myself with 470) it is a bit more windy than Malcesine (at least 2-4 kts more than Malcesine on average)
I leave it up to you discussing internally to the class and if needed with L4K.uk this option and then come back ot me for further steps.

We had 6 boats at the nationals this year in Sardinia, I feel confident that EC in Italy will result in at least 10 italian boats (+ some german) showing up...

Pete Lindley:
Don't forget the teachers. Over here in the UK, they break up about the last week of July. Anything before that then they won't be able to attend. There are about 6 teachers in the Buzz and ISO fleets so that immediately drops us down by 6 boats. The timing of La Rochelle (in addition to our wedding) means we couldn't attend even if we wanted to.

Penny Eyre:
Greetings - Great discussion thread - So....should the Buzz & ISO EC planning be determined by whether we're teachers or not - we should not forget the potential benefits to those others able to book leave more flexibly viz cheaper ferries, accommodation etc .....
At the last count there is only likely to be one teacher in the Buzz (travelling) fleet....it would be worth 'market testing' the ISO (travelling) fleet to determine what 'other' committed interest there might be for an 'out of school holidays' event.

Don't get me wrong - this is not positive discrimination - just a means of testing what option would maximise attendance.....

Pete:
Buzz: - Zoe (soon to be teacher)& Isabel.
ISO: - Colin, Annie, Vicky Gould (I think).

For starters (Ok, I can't remember the 6th). We know when we're not wanted!

Just a few words word about Riva, some comments I make here are a bit of a downer on the place but hey, been there - done that!

Naff stuff:
The launching can be fraught and somewhat slow as the only ways to get launched are through the Marina (if space is available to do so), or onto a slippery 7M-ish wide wooden launch platform that drops off directly into 60M of water. I have had great experience with launching/recovering at Riva during RS Events and trust me, it's not for the faint hearted. If a significant number of boats are involved, a shore crew is not only required but necessary as (if the RS crowd are anything to go by) crews will run the boat down the slip, launch it, and leave the launch trolley for someone else deal with... This is OK for the first 4 boats but after that carnage ensues as the crowd of boats waiting to launch can't get the already launched boats launch trolleys back up the slip and out of the way. I think last year the RS people had a launch control team organsied but I didn't see it cos my crowd were able to launch from the Marina!

The boat park is actually the car park outside the club, this is a public access area and on each occassion I've attended there over the last 6 years there have been thefts so don't leave anything with the boat you don't have to.

Not-quite-so-naff-but-still-significant stuff
At Riva, unlike Malcesine, racing is not a spectator event, the boats have to move up the lake about 1.5 - 2 miles to the course. From the shore this means that the race cannot be viewed - even with Binoculars. Of course, the long haul out means the same back after racing, this can be interesting if the wind drops as boats see how fast they can float the distance home...

Good Stuff:
Winds are indeed good, if it's a 4 in Malcesine it will probably be a 5 or better at Riva and there is also the 'Wall of Death' compression feature of the western bank against which the races tend to take place. Screw it up and your family may be scraping the remains of both you and your boats off the wall to take home

Riva (SC) has a nice bar and a terrace and tower area to sit out on. Riva town itself is lovely with many bars and restaraunts along with good shopping - it can get crowded though.

I like Riva as a place (and to sail *at* but not *from*) but personally, I prefer Malcesine, especially now the clubhouse is done. Just My two-pennyworth

Hi again guys, long time no chat. Sorry I have been pants about replying to this question... I obviously wouldn't be able to go in term time and I think I probably speak for all teachers here in that I would love to have the felxibility of taking holidays when I want but it doesn't work like that! If it did we wouldn't get the benefit of long holidays now would we:)
