If I remember rightly there seemed to be some doubt over the 2008 nationals expressed at the AGM. Are we going to LLandudno? I think there where plenty of mixed feelings about it given by those present at Herne Bay and having spoken to a couple of people this weekend at Bewl I think that it may be an unpopular choice. This subject has already been raised on another thread somewhere I know but I feel it has gone a bit dead. If I can start a debate here we could get some idea of who was going to go and who was not. We have had the view that we should go north expressed but would we definately get a worth while turn out? This year the numbers at all events including the nationals inlands and eurocup have gone down so I belive that it is crutial that we stop this trend now. Looking back at the records shows that the most popular nationals recently was at Restronguet would this indicate that we should go back to the south west? Looe in Cornwall is a very popular club for national championships and usually booked years in advance but I was wondering if they may be able to accomodate us as we only need a weekend and not a whole week. I have sailed there in Ents 400s and Albs and it has always provided the biggest turn outs that those classes have seen. What are your views? Are we committed to North Wales?

I too have spoken to quite a few people about the nationals being held in Wales and get the general feeling that people will be less likely to go. I guess the new google map thing shows where the majority of Buzzes and Iso's are surely this is what we should be using to help plan events. Plus there was a northern event at Kielder that managed to attract 2 boats, this may be telling us something.

Just to let you know that I have cancelled arrangements with Llandudno.
Personally, i think this is a bad decision. I don't think travelling would have been a major problem; for me it took approx 3 hours to get to Herne and would have taken about 4 or maybe 5 to get to get NWales. I don't think the youth festival was a major problem, in fact the Mirror fleet are now taking over our dates at Llandudno and i think they get a 'slightly' bigger fleet than us. I think the way to increase numbers is to move the major events around the country to try to pick up boats from different areas, not to sit in the south east and stagnate.

The google map is not as useful as it might seem. For some reason, the clusters are usually at clubs that can't hold big events. Slipper doesn't have suitable water, Calshot can only accomodate 10ish boats, Bartley Green not wide enough, Restronguet... hmmm maybe we should go back there. Otherwise its just the odd boat here and there which is useful to find contacts for arranging things but doesn't make much of a difference to numbers.

My intention in starting this debate was to see how many people would come on the message board and say they were definately coming to Llandudno. As yet no one has said that they were going although it seems to be irrelevant now. Out of interest here is a list of venues that I have enjoyed as national championship hosts. My favourite is Looe followed by; Teignmouth,Torquay. Falmouth would be on there but it was difficult to find accomodation near the club. I have always wanted to sail at Lyme Regis which has a good reputation and Swanage also sounds good. For me the best location this year was Felixstowe Ferry would they host us? Personaly I loved it at Broadstairs although I can see the tide is a bit of an issue, but what a friendly club. Lloyd.

Keep the nationals out of Kent.

Middle south coast to West is a good start, so Lyme Regis (Beer SC), Weymouth, Poole (maybe Poole week)

Anything on the north Cornish / Devon coastlines?

I'll travel anywhere - bit of a tart you see, but even with all the boats based down here in the south / south east, we still didn't do well for the nationals this year!

We can't go north because there aren't any boats, but there aren't any boats because we don't go north! There maybe a possible event at Rutland next year, and I think this needs to be a major event for us, big prizes, big interest. There will be Vortex, and L3k i think, along with the Buzz fleet. New area, new blood. Lets make the most of this one if it comes off.

Oh well that's another pointless rant from me. What were we talking about anyway?

Hayling!!!!! never again.

We to will travel to any venue. But personally i think the smaller clubs such as broadstairs offer a far better atmosphire that the likes of Hayling or Weymouth.

I have tryed Swanage already this year and they are not iterested.

Sorry that i have no constructive ideas, but we will go wherever they are.

I know we missed the inlands, it was going to be our first trip to an iso event. Work took over unfortunately. But just thought i would pass on the gist of a conversation i had with someone on the 'Torbay Event Week'committee. He contacted someone in the iso committee about hosting the nationals for buzz and iso fleets within the event week. I know the tasars(about 45) and 18ft skiffs (not sure how many)are set to have their nationls there. To be run by the Paignton and Babbacome dinghy sections. They were also looking for another fleet or two to join in. The event will be in its first year and is the combination of Torquay, Brixham ,Babbacombe and paignton sailing clubs within the bay instead of individual regattas. It would also be an opportunity to get the iso and buzz seen by many different people out on the water. Hopefully the event will attract good coverage. I was also told that they will be meeting again on monday and i will be able to pass on to him any interest (if any of course) on the iso and buzz fleets interest in joining in. As time is ticking away and i know they would like to get the organizing for the event further under way.

Whilst I realise I've only attended a few events over the past few years, and the last two nationals I've done at Broadstairs and Herne Bay have only meant me traveling 5 and 15 mins from my home in either direction.. I did, once upon a time travel to all events on the ISO circuit, home and abroad (and Buzz and Boss in the days when they had seperate Nationals!!). I can reccommend any of the Torbay clubs for a Nationals - The Paignton ISO Nationals (can't remember the year) were legendary!! and if you can secure Ken Falcon as a race officer, a bonus too..

As Nik says, we have been invited to hold our Nationals at Torbay week. From previous discussions I knew this would be very popular as a venue so I have already accepted. It is subject to a few confirmation details which are being discussed, which is why i was hanging on before making it public. Torbay 'week' is from Friday 22nd to Wed 27th August.
Nik, feel free to pass on the high level of excitment within the ISO fleet about holding our Nationals at Torbay week.

I think and hope that it will include Buzzes but I haven't had that confirmed yet (i have asked).
Also, we are hoping that we can stick to the normal bank holiday weekend (thats 23,24,25/08/08 Matt) but waiting to see what constraints are imposed by the hosts and fitting in with their arrangements.

Hi Colin, Alan Howlett will contact you directly in the next few days (when back at work) and give more details to you. But in the meantime he has asked if i would pass on some news from last nights meeting. They would love for the buzz's to be able to make it as well as the iso's. The dates of the bank holiday are all ok as well (i think?). Sounds like lots of other good stuff as well. I'll let Alan liaise with you as I'm sure it's not my place to give finer details over the forum. But all sounds very positive.

Thanks for the update Nik.
Now to raise the profile and up the interest for those in that corner of the country. The South East provided a dismal turnout to this years nationals, see if you lot can do better.

Google map may help you find boats and make contact.

One thing we are planning for is another training day the day before the nationals event kicks off. Everybody seemed to get something from it this year at Hernia Bay.

Pete

Did someone say "Training Day" ?? Best put my name down for that one then!
Could you possibly include a bit on how to not be beaten by the Buzz fleet in every damn race?

Me & Tim will be practising through the cold months with the hope that we can at least come close to last which would be a huge improvement. Even so, we had a great time at Herne and am looking forward to attending as many events as pos in 08.

Thanks to you all for making us so welcome.

We will indeed help out if needed Pete; More importantly there will be some 'Doom Bar' ale training in the 'hole in the wall' pub on the friday evening. Where the barmaids' boobs defy gravity and the live music is better than Glastonbury. How can we decline such a fantastic venue with assets like this. Well done COLIN!

We didnt manage to make the nationals this year due to family commitments (all 8pound 9 oz of her) but did have a great training day. Pete.. i even stand up when we tack now !!. The point is, can we have a training day / weekend early in the season. A sort of pre season shakedown sail. I know we would make every effort to attend as i need those bad habits thrashed out of me.
