Just bought Boss 740 from Datchet. Missing rudder stock and tiller. Does anyone have these apart from Wet and Windy? OR is there a suitable alternative from another boat. Would be interested to know any info on this boat. Any Boss sailors down at Poole Harbour or Sutton Bingham? Thanks PhilipH

Hi philip we met at datchet whilst picking up the boss's. I have just been checking a few sites and have found this. It is an advert from the boats and outboards. It is an advert from a guy dismantaling an Iso it has a rudder stock and blade that might just do the job. Check with someone first but could be an option.

Hi Philip,
Please be aware that the original Boss rudder is larger than the Iso rudder (something like 20 cm longer? and a bit wider)

Is the stock not the same?? I should imagine the tiller is longer (hacksaw should sort this out) If you can get the iso stock all you would need is a blade. We havnt managed to do anything with 733 yet, charlie has all the bits, i think we are going to scrub her up wednesday night.

Consensus seems to be that the stock is the same but the blade is longer. So am looking for a blade. A damaged one would do as I can get it copied.

Hi Philip

I used to sail 740 and she should be in reasonably good nick I think you got a real bargain you will notice there are hairline cracks on the outriggers a common problem with Bosses but should be OK, just need to keep an eye on them. We used to do the circuit in 740 and she was a good boat. Unfortunate that someone pinched the rudder I would have thought the class is going to have to modify the class rules to allow alternative manufacture of items or people are going to get stuck eventually.

All the topper made boats had rudders that were on the large side so the iso rudder might be big enough, and maybe faster! (less drag...)

There currently seems a complete lack of second hand supplies. Providing spares at a low cost I feel is the Boss class' biggest challenge over the next year or two. People will buy the boats and go sailing in them while their so cheap but only if they can get the spares to keep them on the water. Who's going to buy a £500 rudder and stock for a £400 boat?

Maybe the foil and stock choice should just be made totally open, and see what people use: ISO/RS400/L5000/L4000?? Not in an attempt to allow people to go faster - just to get them on the water!

Thanks for all these replies. Apart from not being within class rules is there any reason why a smaller blade could not be used, handling and strength would be my first concern. I want to get the boat on the water, the racing bit will come once Ive learnt to keep the thing upright and in a forward direction.

Phillip, what i say is buy the stock and blade from the chap beeaking the iso, try it and see, if it doesnt work out sell the blade to an iso sailor, what have you got to loose? Charlie is usually quite good with these things and is probably right about the blade length, at least the iso rudder would get you sailing it. I am also all for a few rule changes to help keep the class serviceable if nothing else! as long as foils sails etc. measure and arnt modified i dont see who it can hurt? Topper dont care anymore, the only people would be sobstad, but hey they could always lower their prices. I can see the part issue being the biggest thing turning people away from the class as we have seen in recent weeks you can pic a boss up for next to nothing but to buy a new spinny will cost you nearly £1000 it just completly out classes the boat
