I have a slight query about the pages on the Bu22 site on Boat rig settings:

The sections on calibrating the Jib halyard and Swatcher; on which shroud pin should the rig be before calibrating these two?

If anyone could offer an answer i would be most grateful.

thanks, Jon

You need to find out the right pin by measuring the rake/rig tension.

With the swatcher off you put up rig tension and measure the rake, when you have the desired value (see the table at the bottom of the page on the Buzz class site) check that also the tension on the jib luff corresponds. I'd suggest a tension of 26-28 and a rake somewhere around 7.15 mt to start. If you can't possibly match the two, you need to change the pin (lower to increase tension with the same rake, higher to go the other way).

When you are satisfied with this setting, you adjust the swatcher as per the web site.

From Pete at the training weekend. He told us to pin the shrouds dangle,Which we find works.

Put the mast in the boat, lean it to the back of the gate and where ever shrouds dangle on the chain plates pin 'em. Pull the jib up and apply tension (26 on luff using super spars guage) or 28 on Shrouds.

Rake should be about right. Check the mast doesn't bend to one side - if it does then pack mast out at gate to straighten (might not need packing in one side. If mast still bent to one side, then check shroud lengths to see if different - if so then might have to be different pin settings to ensure straight mast.

Ensure mast doesn't wabble from side to side in the gate. Pack out if it does and ensure you don't put bend into the mast.

Pull swatcher on so mast is straight up to the hounds (where the shrouds attach to the mast at the top).

Boat is now well powered up for moderate winds.

For stronger over powering winds, drop the shrouds back one hole only and apply same rig tension.

Hope that helps - If not then I don't know what I'm missing as that is all you have to do to set the boats up (same for Buzz, ISO and Spice)

I have done as suggested and everything would seem to be fine, we have our medium settings spot on now, and just need to sort out what we feel is best for light and heavy settings.
Thanks to all.

However i noticed on the table of settings under the Calibration setting that many of the boats are on Pin 4. Surely this would produce a huge amount of rake? i dont think it would be possible to get out shrouds that far down the shroud plate.
Could anyone enlighten me on this?

Jon Hunt.

Jon,

I imagine those who can get the shrouds to position 4 probably have slightly longer shrouds, the mast foot slightly further forward, or something else just slightly different. I never have the shrouds below position 3 and my boat appears to go ok in most conditions.

I hope that helps. . .

All - ignore other peoples pin settings. Shroud lengths are different for each boat. Rig up as I detailed earlier. The pin settings are only applicable to your boat. Some boats have different shrouds in that one is on pin 3 and the other is on pin 4!

Rake and rig tension is all you are interested in.
