Hi all you Buzz Sailors!!

We have just noticed that the ratings have been released by the RYA for 2011 and the Buzz has changed again, from 1002 to 1003.

Hi Stuart
Occaionally been let down with crew, is there a single handed Handicap?
Sheppey club members don't like me sailing with three sails and cut me to 930, despite me running out of hands.
Looking to run on two sails, anyone done this before?

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony

I frequently singlehand my Spice. I presume when you say 2 sails you mean main and kite? The big problem is that the boat will carry massive weather helm without the jib, the Spice is almost un-managable in this configuration. Once you get the kite up all will be well again but that doesn't help upwind. You could, in theory, re-balance the helm with mast rake but I'd guess it'd be forward of vertical before you achieved the desired effect and the shrouds probably ain't long enough.

Half centreboard helps too but that's probably as much of a handicap as 930 upwind

I'd try to negotiate a sensible handicap with the race committee or just live with 930 (the Spice handicap BTW) if, like me, you just race for fun not pots.

Cheers

Chas

Hi Tony, Chas,

There isn't a rating given for a Buzz in any other form than 2 people sailing with all sail available. In my view if sailing a whole series single handed then the rating shouldn't particularly change as you will be disadvantaged in strong winds, advantaged in lighter winds and over a series this normally evens out. Clubs are encouraged to change handicaps, but it should be a sensible amount and then adjusted over time until you get a rating that works well. 930 is certainly unreasonable!! I would suggest starting at 990 or similar and see how it goes, if you forward me some results i can work out a rating for you.

Forgeting the rating side of things and focusing on the main item, which is getting sailing when a crew is not available, the Buzz handles well when sailed with main only, main & jib or 3 sailing, the only time it can be a struggle is 2 sail gybing when windy as you won't have the speed you need, but it can be done.

Chas, as you say the Spice doesn't like being sailed without all its sails, but that's because the large roach on the main needs the large jib to balance it. We haven't sailed our Spice much this year, but I seem to remember it being ok downwind without the kite, but i wouldn't fancy gybing it without the kite, as you say these boats are always better sailed as they were designed. We should be out Spicing most weekend now that our other commitments have finished for this year, yippee!!

Stuart.
