If anyone is interested I thought I would say where we are sailing this winter. You never know it might encourage someone else to come and join in!
Winter Series; Thorpe Bay YC see http://www.essex-web.com/tbyc/racecalendar.php
Boxing day; Leigh-On-Sea SC The Brass monkey race. Start time 1245 This is an, annual race, all in handicap open to everything from Tideways to 49ers. For details on how to get there see http://leighsailingclub.wordpress.com/
The frozen sheets race at TBYC on the 29th December. Start time 1345. This race has had as many as 58 starters in recent years mostly faster classes such as Musto skiffs, 49ers, 29ers 800s cats and of course us, although I was sailing a 400 in those days

I am hoping to do the Hoo Freezer and maybe the Bloody Mary. I will put the dates of these up at a later date. It would be great if someone felt inspired to come along and give us another ISO to race against. Also I think it will be a good advert for the class to get the boat seen at these venues. It's not that far to sunny Southend from King George SC in fact one of the guys sailing there joined after the reservior was closed for a while and never went back!

Racing Saturday & Sunday, Posh dinner dance on the Saturday night - formal wear (no shorts or Hydes T-shirts. Don't think they do Broadside either. All to do with the Merricks trust or something.

just clearly not the correct dates (normally 1st weekend of feb)

normal handicap racing Saturday(do as many as poss, this year only 1 was completed)
then a 'black tie' dinner in the evening

Sunday is one pursuit race then prize giving after that etc.
ALL money raised from the event goes to John Merrick's trust

believe there was only one ISO there this year in the form of 641.
tho i warn you that if you want to go to the dinner that as soon as tickets are being sold get one.(same if you want to sleep in the club accommodation

oh and watch out for Bury Lake Young Mariners /Herts youth squad dominating the dance floor

Sounds Good. How farn is Rutland from Poole? Barry and I might be up for some winter racing.

And i wouldn't rule out the iso class for dancing Pete and Graham can clear a dance floor in seconds, just give them a white T-shirt and they are away.

think it is in the midlands area(ish) not sure really,

and not ruling out the iso class on the floor... just warning you.(we have well known sailors Craig Johnson,Toby Linnell and Gareth Lincoln with us )

we got told off this year during the evening because we were to loud while playing drinking games

all in all there was smiles all round.

however i have been persuaded to lend my spice to friends and let them race it... so i will be there in a RS200 instead

What a night that was eh Rob?! I seem to remember Barry and yourself doing your stuff as well, not forgetting the silver feather!

Obviously the point of this thread is for us to attend events in order to raise awareness of the class. Why don't we single out one event that everyone makes a big effort to come to? Maybe call it a winter championships?

It would be good to go to an event like the tiger trophy where we could show everyone what the boat is about on the water and what we are like off it too, during an evening. Obviously this would only work if there was a large interest.

Ratie get an iso.

Good point G. I think the Hoo freezer might attract a good turn out as there have been several ISOs there in the past. I remember hearing about it from IKG,Jonny and Mr Lindley. They said it was windy; I was out at TBYC that day in the 400 didn't seem that bad to me. I guess they must have been a bit soft:-)

Rob was it the smell that cleared the dance floor?

I have to say we went to the Hoo freezer it was grim. Not a nice place, the weather might have tinted my opinion, but the organisation and safety cover left a bit to be desired + No social and a really tricky launch.

Lets go for one on a Lake it will give us more chance of getting out.

As for the smell on the dance floor, other than a lot of testosterone all I could smell was rum.

I think we need to do this event:

Yup - agree with that Pete. We always get to hear about it too late - but not this time

How about our worthy Triple Winners taking up the challenge ?? Think it's a one boat entry per class.

Rutland SC is here :-

The Hoo lived up to it's name both times we went. Arrived in a blizzard and 3 inches of snow 2nd time - 4 wheel drift in the Subaru at 0 mph with the boat on the back was interesting !! Had about 7 ISOs when Team Essex came along that year - good crack.

Not done the Tiger before - I hear it's a great event so put my vote that direction. A big yes to using the event - whichever one gets the vote - as a Winter Champs. Great idea !!!

Other Winter events that work are the Grafham Asym Slalom http://www.grafham.org/events/?cat=2&list_events=1 - I know we can't make all of them

Datchet Winter Warmer - as it's an open they manage the race series well. Centralish venue.

Anything over the Xmas / New Year is out for us - accumulating brownie points

And this might be interesting at Draycote - sounds like ideal training / tips & tricks time with rescue laid on. http://www.draycotewater.co.uk/WindwardLeewardRacing-2.pdf

Not forgetting Gareth's plug for Bartley Green .............

The thing at Excel allows two boats per class. I can most likely do it but will have to wait untill my ski trip is confirmed. I would say I was 90% sure so if someone else is going to join me we could get our entry in soon. It says on Y&Y site classes to enter through their class secretary so we should ask Bruce to have a look at the link. Is there anyone else interested out there?

Pete, Annie, Lloyd and Graham,

I've informed DSM and Y&Y (via a press release) that you'll be competing in the 'Battle of the Classes' at the London Boat Show. I hope it's a bit warmer than last year.

Good luck!

Jim.

Eamon and Kate turned up to the Tiger- though I think their result might have been less impressive than mine on the B14 (turns out lard alone doesn't keep the boat upright when you've got no cunningham).

Anyway, would have been nice to have seen more of you there. Cold, windy but fun. Though I believe for the Saturday fleet races, Isos were in the slow fleet- PY cut off was 925.
