I have an 80th party I can't get out of on the Saturday but hopefully we will be along for Sunday as it seems a long time since we saw you guys. We haven't been out on the water since November so are likely to be very rusty (nothing new there then!)

Morning all

Only a couple of weeks to Oxford... if any one needs a helm or crew for either a Buzz or an ISO... ill be there with Hannah any way and would love to have a sail

For those that dont know me I won odd races at the opens last year helming a Buzz and came second at the ISO inlands crewing for Ian Moss (although that was much more to do with Ians helming than it was my crewing!)

Regards

Ian Foxwell

I am now the proud owner of ISO 801. I am also a a proud member of Oxford Sailing Club. I haven't been in my ISO yet, and my crew has run away this weekend, but I would love to meet other ISO sailors and, substitute crew permitting, join in a bit. I can only be there on Sunday.

It's quite a nice pond, but on windy days the launch/landing area at the (NE) downwind corner can get choppy and exciting after a tiring day's sailing.
Some years ago when I lived near there, the water got infected with some microbiological nasty which had interesting effects on consumers. The reservoir was immediately named "Fartmore" by local wags...have fun there
greetings to all from Germany

I’m not about to write a report but it was a great weekend.

A bit daunting to the newcomers though as it was pretty strong stuff on Saturday, calmed down a bit for the first two races on Sunday and then howled through again for the final race. Most crews their capsized at some point over the weekend… some of us more than once!

Good club, with some well organised racing. The both fleets where as welcoming as ever and I think it was particularly good of both Bob and Roger to welcome the new crews into the group.

All in all I think it was a great start to the year with some good friendly racing, taken seriously but not so seriously that it detracted form the fun. There are lot of fleets that could learn some thing from the way these meetings are held

Thanks Richard for giving me a ride in the front your ISO and putting up with my abysmal co-ordination and footwork. I’m paying for it now though with all the bruises!

Ian

Some very strong winds on Saturday Pete, not quite survival conditions but alot a very strong gusts that caught most out at times. If you got on one of the gusts downwind it was a very fast ride to the leward mark and gave pleanty of practice of those high speed jibes!

Sunday was noticably less wind but variable and it was tough getting the settings right. Last race was quite bizarre. Just as the gun went the wind died completely with lanes of wind down the course paying very well for those in it leaving others frustrating becalmed. The wind filled in a bit but was moving around upto 90 degrees. Wind then built to almost the strength of Saturday to finish as dark cloud came over.

All in all an excellent weekend at a very organised club. Good OOD, good courses and free sandwiches/mini pasties at the end.

We were trying out a carbon boom for the first time and had no problems other than readjusting the strops as the boom doesn't bend. In the heavy wind I didn't notice much difference but in the very light wind it was easier to control; with no kicker on it was much easier to pull it block to block in the gusts, With the alloy one alot of effort is required to bend the boom. Pulling the kicker on was also much easier and when it was on it was on. None of that eeking a bit more out of it by bending the boom a bit more. I think it would benefit the Buzz alot as the kicker on it is much harder to pull on due to the arrangement under the mainsheet swivel block.

As for rules for the Carbon booms, we have had alot of problems sourcing them. Although Topper produced a prototype and it was made legal at the start of last year it has not been possible to get one. A home made one will now be legal as long as it is a carbon or alloy tube made of similar diameter using the standard gooseneck fitting, and that there are two mainsheet blocks and kicker strop in similar/same positions. Made up ones will be available too from good ISO suppliers. Ask a committee member for details.

Ah Ian see other people fell over in the boat too. It wasn't just me! I think we had all the weather for the entire weekend packed into that last race, never known anything like it!

Did I mention the flys??

Tim

PS Carbon hurts less when it hits you on the head, so its not bad from the crews point of view either..

Dan_Buzz414 - ISO Race report and results in the "Racing / Results / Fixtures" section of the site. www.isoracing.org.uk Look for the Oxford event and view the report that way.

Chuffin crews - all a pain in the ar*e. Never around when you need them. Wouldn't have minded if it had been blown off, or no wind and rain etc. Even my shift times meant I could have easily have made it to the club well before the first race of each day! Grrrrr!!!

Not bitter though!

Pete
