Ok,Dumb question time.
I have just purchased my first Iso (597).
It had a busted tiller/top stock joint when I bought it.
I have today recieved a new top stock and tiller from Wet & Windy.
I have attached the new top stock to rudder blade, fine.
Problem is you basically have a plain shaft (stock) to fit into
a tube (tiller).
What do people do ? do they cross drill and bolt to retain the joint or just allow on the tightness of the joint to retain ????
It appears that I may have to "adjust" the stock anyway as the tiller arm will not at present slide over it.
Preparing for first sail this weekend, looking forward to it with excitement and a little trepadation....I used to sail a Nat 12 before this.
Thanks in advance for help

Hi,

Our tiller was pre drilled so we just drilled the stock and we riveted it in place, however the stock took a bit of rubbing down first to get into the tiller as the casting is not a true circle plus the black paint coating didnt help. Its tight and that seems to do the job, plus its lasted 2 seasons now with no issue.

That should do it

Cheers

Oh and make sure the tiller and stock are in line. Thats not so easy to check, so we held the stock in the workmate and then had a good eye, as we pushed the tiller onto it !
Good luck

Yup - that's about right. Rivets hold the standard arm and top stock together.

When you adjust the top stock rear bolt make sure the rudder blade pushes **hard** against the bottom of the lower stock. If you end up with any gap there at speed it isn't tight enough and you will feel weather helm.

To hold the top stock in place many people drill and pin it. I find a piece of elastic from the lower gudgeon over the big nut on top is enough to hold it down - and gives quick release if needed when coming ashore.

Congratulations on your purchase! Good to see one of the earlier ISO's coming out to play. Hope the maiden sail goes well!
