Just got home from this fine event. As we were nearer to 4th place than anyone else from the 3 ISO entrants, I should write an event report, but circumstances make it difficult to do so with any authority. The sun shone and the wind blew from the east

In summary, Hans Smorenburg and Maarten Mortier came and showed everyone how to do it by leading the ISO's home in every race, and winning the handicap dinghy event overall. Nik Rudolf with son Jan-Peer pushed them at times, but were handicapped by a curved mast which would not look out of place on a Boss (I wonder if the different loads from the shiny new Hydes had an effect? The sail did not set well with prebend of about 6 inches from the spreaders upwards). 828 contribution was smaller, we completed race 1, took a break for little repairs in race 2, and before race 3 started I fell over on the marina slipway and (discovered later) broke my coccyx, which hurts. We went out for race 3 on a promise that it would be one lap only due to fallng wind, but on arriving at the finish, alas no gun so we fell into painful retirement. However there was a marvellous moment when the 3 ISO's were abreast across the river.

On Sunday Hans and Naarten completed the whitewash, sadly we took no further part as I had by then been Xrayed and declared broken.

The river is about 150 metres wide with noticeable current, so it is possible to go from good position to last in quick time if you make wrong decisions.

Future events are already being discussed between Hans and Nik, maybe combined event in Holland or N. France.

The welcome from the club and the organisation (many thanks to Nik who was the main driving force) was brilliant, and I certainly will go back if a) a similar event happens again and b) my body has been welded back together. For someone contemplating a first trip to Europe to sail, it would be a perfect event as it was not quite as intensive as playing with the big boys and the big winds on Garda. It's also ot so far (near Luxembourg)

hallo to all from my Zimmer frame
Richard and Ute

I'm glad to know the event was succesful, I hope you'll recover soon Richard !
I would say to Nik: go on setting up the class, it took some time and some tries in Italy as well to grow the numbers but they are growing now ! I hope we'll meet in Germany next year !

Something important I forgot to mention - it is very good when an event has as one of its sponsors a pharmacy. Then when the clumsy and the older team members get injured, expert advice and rubbing alcohol are quickly available. It's called HUBERTUS-APOTHEKE in Trier-Zewen. thanks for your support

To understand this look at the photos
www.yachthafen-trier.de
German Language
-> Bilder vom Treveris Cup or -> Bilder vom Porta Nigra Marathon

Otherwise you'll get the solution at Calshot or Maccagno, the latter is shure.

Sorry, I dived down for a week due to some duties and familiar commitments. I'll write a report but please give me some time.

Cheers Nik

Dave
nice thought, but it is really not needed in the ISO fleet. Maybe Buzz sailors are different?
The only help I need is with standing up and sitting down (for the next few weeks) and longer term, something for my worst handicap, that is that I'm not very good at sailing an ISO. I think I need to buy a boat with cushions and a fridge.

A postscript to the excellent Trier event (sponsored by ... you have already heard)- in one of the results sheets, 719 and 828 had a yardstick of 98, while poor Hans and Maarten had 97 - maybe Nik can clarify why?

That was corrected , 97 seems to be the value in NL.
In Germany there is no yardstick number for ISO dinghies. So we take the Austrian one: Neusiedler See Tiefwasser.

The yardstick number in Germany is different from the portsmouth number.

DT's proposal might be tested for bended masts. May be a trial worthy. I'll ask my sponsor.

Cheers Nik

Interesting to note the effect of a bent mast on the set of the new (sponsored by.....did I already mention?) Hyde main. The upper picture on the Marathon report page 1 shows the sail with inefficient creases, in the lower pic on the same page you can see how bent the mast was.
my bum sill hurts, and we have decided not to come and play at Maccagno - sorry. We may be nearby on Chiemsee at that time - a day visit is possible.
hope you all had fun at Weymouth
Richard
