Hi again,
Another outing and another breakage - this time I have pulled the spinaker halyard block off the mast. The holes for the fitting look a bit worn/corroded and I doubt a 5mm rivet will stay in there for very long.
Should I look at bolting the fitting back on (the problem being its a bit fiddly and the block will rest against the lower nut) or should I drill new holes (and weaken the mast)? - Anyone had this problem before?
Thanks |

I saved my old mast with the same problem. Put a small pilot hole at the top end of the crack / corrossion and one at the bottom end.
Next get some stainless plate and mold it around the mast.
Next drill 6 holes to rivet this plate to the mast.
Drill two holes in the stainless plate for the spinnaker block fittin g. These two hole need to be aligned over the old corroded holes - els e the kite won't fit to the mast if the block is too high or too low!
Once happy with the dry fit, put sealant between the plate and the ma st and into the drill holes. This stops electrolitic corrossion thingy .
Now bang big stainless rivets into the holes.

This has lasted for several years and in all sorts of winds.

Pete, I can't believe that you are describing your mast!!!! I thought you kept it in impecable condition.
Surely, you are thinking of mine from last October 2004 - mind you those were big rivets that fixed it after the 4mm stainless steel rivets failed.
It's still going strong and grtting some abuse - just not on the circuit this year.
