Hi everybody, I am posting here some info about the route to reach Maccagno. I suggest you pass through Switzerland, it should be the shortest and cheapest option.

Starting with bad news...to drive on Swiss motorways you need to pay a road tax for the car AND for the trailer, it is valid 1 year (so you don’t need to pay on the way back…) good news is that tax is only 27 + 27 Euro, which is probably less than the Italian motorway toll if you entered Italy from a different route. And good news is that petrol/Diesel is cheaper in Switzerland than Italy, and you don’t have to pay any other toll so at the end this route is really much cheaper!

You can probably follow different routes to enter Switzerland, according to your Ferry Destination… and possibly take a detour through Luxenbourg to take advantage of some of the cheapest fuels in Europe, so look carefully at the map. However at last you should drive through the Gotthard Tunnel and head south towards Bellinzona – Lugano-Italy.

Leave the Motorway at BELLINZONA SUD, following indications for LOCARNO-LUGANO. Go straight following LOCARNO-GAMBAROGNO, you’ll find signs at every roundabout. At the 6th roundabout turn left, following for LUINO-GAMBAROGNO. You’ll drive by the lake, go ahead and be careful because there are speed radars so don’t go too fast! You will enter Italy at Dirinella, remember to fill up before leaving Switzerland… unleaded is 20-30 cents (Diesel 8-12 cents) cheaper than in Italy!

After entering Italy you drive by the lake for ca 9 km. You’ll drive through 2 tunnels, just after the second the main road narrows and turns left, going under a bridge. Don’t take the turn left, instead you have to turn right following indications for GolfoGabella (white sign, among many others, one also points to Camping Lido, where some of you will be staying). After 50 m take again right, drive to the lake and here you need to turn left (or swim!). UVM is 150 m ahead, just 100 m before the camping. Possibly we will add some sign to help you find your way in the last part, but they may still not be in place when the first of you arrive...

Looking forward to meet you in Maccagno!

Please look up coming to the continent by car. Everybody, nearly, is driving on the right, i.e. wrong, side. There are some special rules.
Belgium: tempolimit 120km/h with trailer, excess more than 10km/h is a criminal offence
France: tempolimit 130km/h with trailer, 110 when it rains
Italy: tempolimit 80km/h Motorways with trailer, 70km/h normal roads, 50 in villages, no other rules. Drive like it is reasonable. Have a look to other vehicles. If an Italian sees a friend on the other direction, he will suddenly stop in the middle of the road, open the window, and will talk, talk and talk.
There are no queues in Italy. If there should be one, look for a slip road like a patrol station, a parking place or something else and pass as much of the queue you can. If you missed the slip road, avoid people using it to come back on the motorway. Maximum distance to the car ahead is 10cm. Different in Germay: Zip System, nobody uses the patrol station.

more italian road advices you find here (english)

If anybody goes via Luxembourg before the 29th give me a message. You are invited to come to Treves (only 30km from Luxembourg city).

Cheers Nik

Further road information.
Please be sure not to park outside designated areas... local police is very strict on this and you risk to get a ticket!
Good news is that everything is within walking distance, so you can just leave your car at the Hotel-Camping most time.
There is a large parking area in Parco Giona, where boat park is located, but it is not free-need to pay at the bar. We will provide you with a free parking pass, but it will be valid only for the days of racing... so if you really need to bring your car there before Saturday, you have to pay. Obviously you can get there for the time needed to get the boats in the boat park, but should take your car away as soon as you have finished. We will be around to indicate you the closer parking. If you are staying at camping Lido, it is just 20 m from the boat park so you already know where you can leave your car!

See you in Italy.

Yes, those arriving early can locate the boat+trailer in the boat park. If you stay at the Lido Camping, the entrance to the boat park is just at the end of the road, 50 m after camping entrance.

I'll be around wednesday evening (probably late evening), but you should find people from the club to give you indications.
