Hey all, I am now sailing from Hayling Island Sailing club. Great racing but there is only one other boss and it never goes out plus it does not have the mods.
I am after opinions.............The Rudder!!! I would love to mess around with this, i hate the tilt system that it has and was looking to change it to one similar to the 29er/49er with a dagger board type rudder (much less to go wrong) as I am not fleet racing i am looking to develop my boat with a few other mods.
Has anyone else played around with their boats other than the standard conversion which is great! I would be interested to hear, I was also looking at getting a new main cut. I am racing against inter 14's and their mainsail is fab. I am sick of sobstad and the fact that their sails just dont seem to last! Again, has anyone else got a different main i.i. fuller at the top instead of being really steep in the leach????????
Lemme know and I look forward to some opinions.
TTFN, Mike |

Hi Mike I'm just along the way at Shoreham, together with Peter Bennett (current champ). Maybe we could get together for some class racing? Your ideas seem quite interesting. Boss 755 |

I had a reply from Ovington suggesting I use a 29er rudder stock and fabricate my own rudder. The thing is that the boss rudder is SO wide compared with all the other boats even the L5000 so when i'm tackin I am putting the brakes on. I will try something and keep you posted to see how ell things work. Obveously i will keep my existing rudder but will have lots of fun playing!!!!! |

It might be fun to try a few of those developments, although keep the standard bits for when more than one Boss get together (an increasingly rare event I'm afraid). Regarding the mainsail, we're probably the only people who have bought a new main since Sobstad moved their production out to China, and the quality is fine, as well as being a better shape with more at the top of the rig, as you suggested. OK, nothing as extreme as the 14's, and that might be worth a try for fun - anything to improve the Boss' upwind speed in the medium stuff |

I think the problem, no, i know the problem with the boss is the hull shape! What we do at the top of the mast is never gonna actually create much benefit in the way of speed. |

Yeah Nick, but we can't really do much about that - except with a chainsaw. On the plus side, it does make the Boss easier to sail and much more stable |

but does that not infact take the fun out of racing the boat, trying to tame the lion?

Not really. Once you've tamed the lion, you've still got to make it bring you tea in bed, make the supper and do the washing..... |
