Hi, we are new to sailing ISO. So far we can keep the boat upright and have a whole bunch of fun. Where we run into problems is in retrieving the kite. Can anyone share the methods they use to rig theirs? Thanks. Dave & Annette 693 Germany

One of the key things to do is, once you thread the downhaul through the eye, thread it through a small plastic bobble, then tie a knot after this (think it's about 12"/30cm from the end). This will stop the kite bunching up on the way down too much. This is fairly common to most chute launched assymetrics.

Don't know if this would be class legal, but some of the Laser 2000s ensure they get the length right by actually having a seperate bit of line attached to the downhaul patch. They threadthe bobble on as described, and tie the end of the downhaul to this extra line. As I said, I've no idea if this is allowed on the ISO- though it's hardly a "go faster" mod, just one to make life that little bit easier.

Thanks Al....I`m wondering if we even have the kite downhaul rigged correctly...right now it runs through the chute/sock, up through the eye and attaches to the webbing loops on the upper end of the kite. We tried a knot/bobble behind the eye, seems to work some of the time but is a disaster the rest! When you say "tie a knot after this 12"/30cm from the end"...the end of what? also, could it be that the uphaul & downhaul are one continuous system? Sorry if these seem like dumbass questions, we thought we where smart enough to figure it out alone!!! Thanks again, Dave

Sorry, I meant tie the knot that distance from the end of the downhaul. The bobble just helps stop the knot pulling through. The halyard/downhaul should be a continuous system- have you got seperate ones?

Not been sailing it long, but I've found with the iso that the best way is to try and keep the kite flying, pull in the slack on the downhaul, and then quickly trip the halyard cleat off and pull very quickly. still not worked out if being on a beam reach or close to a dead run is actually better- at the weekend, I reckon I got it in tidier when we were at a bit of angle, which somehat goes against my instructor training.

Hi Al, Thanks again.

" The halyard/downhaul should be a continuous system- have you got seperate ones?"

Yes, we seem to have a quite short halyard and the downhaul was attached seperately to the webbing loops on the kite. Will try the way you describe and on a continuous system.

Thanks Dave

The kite halyard should be continuous - about 19m of 4mm - see Ropes List

http://www.isoracing.org.uk/rules_regs/ropelist.htm

As Al says, use a plastic ball between the downhaul knot and the eye and use another ball between the knot at the head and the sheave in the mast. Saves knots getting stuck.

Al - you have the right approach, take up the slack with the kite still full ( pass the sheet back to helm and yell at him ) pop both cleats then pull like crazy.

Come to La Rochelle where there'll be plenty of people to show you / check your boat set up against others - and some great sailing ( better than Garda in many respects in my view ).

Cheers

Bob
