Found a rather unpleasant looking crack under the gunwale last weekend. It spreads out each side from the where the shroud fitting bolts through the gunwale. The gelcoat is chipped around the bolt/washer. I'm guessing this is from the rig tension - As far as I am aware we haven't hit anything. There is a hairline crack in the gel coat in the same position on the other side of the boat but this looks a bit worse than that.

We carried on sailing anyway in a nice F4 - spinny up full planing in waves, etc and it didn't look or feel like the shround was in iminent danger of ripping out of the hull. Does anyone have any experience of this with ISOs? Does it need a bit of gelcoat filler or something more substantial? I've got a few pictures and would be grateful if somebody could take a look!

I have cracks in the same place Pete. Looks like previous owner has tried to repair but not very successfully. They don't seem to get any worse so not too worried about them.
I tried going up to the recommended rig tension last yr and more cracking noises and cracks appeared around daggerboard case. May have been coincidence but I have gone back to a lower tension now.

What is this recommended rig tension you are using?

300lbs on a shroud using a SuperSpars Rig tension guage shouldn't cause any cracks etc. The shrouds are 3mm. 400lbs might make the boat creek a bit.

When you come to the Nationals at Hayling Island (not far from Hythe) at the end of the month, we'll be able to check it out for you.

Thanks Pete - have been using the recommended rig tension as above which I have measured with a superspars guage. I've emailed you a photo of the crack.

Unfortunately wont be at the nationals - had everything lined up and then one of those last minute weddings cropped up (not mine!). Will be at Herne Bay if the boat is still in one piece!
