Hello everybody
I've got some problems with the mast of a boss. There seems to be something wrong. I'm mainly interested in the mast beding and the spreader length and angle.
It would also be great, if somebody has a kind of plan,... of the mast with the position of the component and the bending of the mast.
Thank's for every help Andy |

Hi Andy, I'm new to the Boss too so what I have got to say may not be much use...
Mast rake and mast bend (forestay and shroud / lowers tension) seem to be all linked together - like you can't really change one without altering the other. I only know that the windier it is the more the mast raked back.
Which mast have you got - the original one with lots of pre-bend and single spreader or the newer one with twin spreaders?
Please, you experienced sailors, help us new guys out! |

Hi Tel Boy
Thank you for your tips. It's correct, that the windier it is the more the mast should racke back. But that's just to rack the mast back... There are different trim descriptions in the news letters on the boss class webpage.
The problem I have is the pre bending mast setup, because there is something wrong. I've got an original carbon one with one single spreader. Which one do you have?
Regards Andy

Hi Andy,
We have the twin spreader mast which has very little pre-bend. It seems, from reading old post on the Boss site, that old masts and new sails will not fit each other... Do you have a new sail? If you lay out your main on the floor is the luff fairly straight? or quite curved? Send any pics direct to my e-mail address. Next time we are down at the boat I'll take some pics for you.

There are a lot of issues here, and the old mast (Carbospar) is very different to the new twin spreader one (Superspar), but you can twin-spreaderise the old mast and still go just as quick. On the old mast, the pre-bend is achieved by the bottlescrew (if you undo the bottlescrew, the mast actually has a strange S-shaped reverse bend). I don;t have the measurements for this any more, but as far as rake is concerned, you can put the jib halyard block-to-block in the light-to-medium stuff, and gradually rake back as it blows, depending on the weight on the rudder. It is fairly critical in 15 knots of breeze upwind, as it is the difference between planing or not. Use of the cunningham is also important at the same time (not to early!). But the new mast is a different beast, and you need only slight prebend (achieved with the upper shrouds/spreader combination). I have some numbers somewhere if it helps. The old main can fit on the new mast as long as you recut the luff round, and this can still be competitive. But the new main will not fit on the old mast, but you may be able to order an old cut from Sobstad. Or there are many old sails knocking around with plenty of life in them. The best solution is to come to an event like the Inlands in October, and then you can see how other boats are set up. We would be happy to help with this |

Frist of all, thank's for the information.
If got the old must and a corresponding sail. Pork_pie_eater wrote: ...you can put the jib halyard block-to-block in the light-to-medium stuff, and gradually rake back as it blows, depending on the weight on the rudder... I know, but that's the problem. If I thight the jib halyard to block-to-block, the distance between the mast and the frame is only about a half inch!!! Thus, on one hand, it's nearly impossible to loose the halyard tensioner, on the other hand, the must is "hangig back"...
The first suggestion was, that there is something wrong with the length of the halyard, but that's ok. Thus, the next conclusion is, that there has to be something wrong with the mast beding.... I've no other idea....
Thank for all futher ideas and helps
I take some pictures of the boat and put it on the internet...it may help....

That would be great. But unfortunately I don't live in Endland. I'm from Switzerland and haven't got any holiday.... |

Being new boys... how far forward should the 'new mast' rake, for light winds, when the jib blocks are 'block to block'. Our mast is less than half way forward in the mast gate. Is this right? And the jib forestay seems too slack at the above setting... Can any one advise. PLEASE |
