I have a problem with my rudder. It will either lock down or up, but not both at once.

If I move the bolt attaching the tiller to the rudder back, I can lock the rudder up, but it seems there isn't enough play in the cam to then lock the rudder down.

If I move the bolt forward, I can lock it down, but the little bar in the tiller that catches the cam hits the metal of the stock forward of the cam and so the rudder refuses to stay 'cocked'.

There doesn't seem to be a middle ground.

Obviously I have is set so I can lock the rudder down, but when launching and recovering it is very annoying that I can't cock the rudder up - I've damaged it more than once.

I hope someone can make sense of my confusing explanation and tell me how to set this up properly. My last rudder could do this, but I've never been able to get this one to do so.

Hi,

The bolt on the top stock/tiller shouldn't be clamped to the rudder blade, but should be free to move in the slot, this allows the tiller to move forwards and latch to keep the rudder up.
To set the rudder correctly for when in the down position some bits of plastic/shims are required in the slot, i use bits of plastic cut from a fascia board, but it depends what you have lying around in the garage.
If the above doesn't make sense then i'll take some photos to show you what i mean.

That's interesting.

I had a similar problem, but could just get it to work by clamping it quite precisely in the centre somewhere.

I never knew it was supposed to travel.

I'll give it a try.

I guess my rudder is not fully down currently if it's clamped?

Mine doesn't travel and it locks up and down.

If it is allowed to travel then when the tiller is locked down, the rudder blade kicks back and loads up unless the boat is flat or healed slightly to windward.

With the correct spacer in it doesn't move at all when locked down, but does when released from the catch, ie - it is only able to move forwards.

They all have plastic inserts when new, but over time they either wear, fall out, or get discarded by people who don't know what they are for.

That makes perfect sense, I'll leave it free to travel next weekend.

I don't have any shims, but I'm sure I can find something that'll do the job.

I've just got a new Hyde main - something else to try at the weekend - but neither my jib or kite are class legal... Might see what my crew is upto for the inlands anyway.

Many thanks.

You'd be welcome at the Inlands with the jib and spinnaker you have, assuming they're similar to the Sobstad or hyde ones and no faster!!

I've been told there are at least four reasons why I can't go that weekend, so I'll have to try and get to something else another time.
