I've replaced the line that runs through the pole and attaches to the kite tack. I marked the pole (with tape) beforehand to show where it's supposed to come out to but trouble is the tape fell off so I don't know how far to extend my pole(?!) - is it a case of as far as possible without it falling out? I've never adjusted this before so it's quite possible it was in the wrong place anyway.

Yes always push your pole as far as you can without it falling off or out.
