Question 1: Has the rule about training edge of foils changed from 5mm to 2mm recently? I am sure I remember it being 5mm?

Question 2: When sailing upwind we reckon coming 5 degrees off the wind and letting the main out a little is quicker than sailing as close as possible even though you sail further or tack more often. However, since we cannot race against other ISOs unless we go to open meetings it is hard to test the theory!! Does it sound ridiculous or not?

2mm trailing edge has been the rule for about 7 years at least.

As for cracking off up wind, this is highly dependant on wind and weight. The boat will increase in speed and you will lose pointing ability. The question you have to ask is does the increase in speed overcome the loss in pointing?

Havig found I cannot point with my old cream crackered jib, it was a force 3 to 4, we held our own - just! Our downfall was the tactics!

Our c/board trailing edge is 5mm. Will it make a big difference to our sailing if we grind it off a bit (even though we sail in the rear quarter of the fleet at opens) If there is any point in sanding it off, how is it best do it? What sort of taper should we aim for?

Measure a line from the trailing edge to the front edge. Sand down evenly on both sides with wet & dry upto 2" from the trailing edge from bottom of the daggerboard case to the tip of the board. Keep the bit in the case wide so as to maintain a snug fit.

It will stop the humming / vibrations. It will reduce the amount of air and disturbed water passing back from it to the rudder. The smoother the water flow on the rudder, the more control you "should" have! Rudders are designed to go through water not air.

I guess this is where my rudder spin out arise from...
big uneven trailing edge.... The boat starts to sing and finally ending in a kind of speed wobble (I am driving old motorbikes too)...
I ll try to do some sanding....
