I know its a bit early to be thinking about next year, but next years Nationals (ISO, Buzz and Boss if they like) will be at Llandudno on the late may bank holiday (May 24th to 26th). Llandudno have warned us that the Welsh youth festival is also in town at the same time so you will need to book accomodation early.
Colin

ISO/BUZZ/BOSS Nationals - 24th to 26th May 2008

MIRROR Nationals - 28th May to 1st June 2008

It has recently been brought to the attention of Llandudno
Sailing Club that the Urdd Eistedfodd (Welsh Youth Festival)
is being held in Llandudno during the time that these two
National Championships are scheduled.

In excess of 75,000 visitors are expected in the town!

Please advise your members that accomodation during this
week will be at a premium and early booking is strongly
advised.

Great to have advance planning.

While I check my diary, it would be helpful to understand how the decision to select Llandudno took pace.

Many Thanks

Cool - I reckon that'd be a good venue. Haven't the 49ers got their nationals there this year?

Lucky for me my girlfriend's parents live in Llandudno so should be no problem getting abed for the night - not sure how many of the ISO fleet I'll be able to sneak in to their house though.

Jim.

P.S. It's always sunny there too!

After the survey we did last year (thanks to all those that responded and Pete for implementing) there seemed to be a fair amount of interest in a Welsh venue although the initial suggestion (Aberdovey) didn't work out. So Isabel and I tried a few other clubs in Wales. Llandudno were booked up for 2007 but suggested reserving for 2008. We grabbed the chance. It should be a great location and a turn for the Northern fleet to have an easier journey... but still not too difficult to get to from the South. It certainly seems popular for Championships with the '9er fleets there this year and the Mirrors just after us. The survey was evenly split on May/Aug so we are oscillating at the moment. Probably go back to Aug and south for 2009.

Thanks for the warning Colin.

I have had a quick look for accommodation possibilties and there is a campsite 3 to 4 miles east of the club (Dinarth Hall Farm Caravan Park) and plenty of B and B's available a lot closer for about £60 a night (double or twin room).

If there are going to be lots of people around the area, then ok we need to book accom, but will we be able to park our cars? Might be best to abandon the cars at the club for the long weekend and walk to B&B's. Hang the expense of the B&B's also - just to save any potential hassle of transport & parking???

I will see if I can find out some more info including whether sleeping on site is possible.

Discussing the 2008 nationals last Saturday evening at Calshot with the many of the class stalwarts, the consensus was that we look for a new venue.
Always with these events the majority make bookings for accommodation in the last month or two. If the town is booked solid our turnout will be very low.
It would be better to take the bullet now rather than have a disaster next year.

Seconded!

How about south Wales? Milford Haven area is ok ish - still a long way, but swings and roundabouts as they say. Dale SC is it? Not sure about the weather, sailing, club set up etc.

Annie found this website yesterday:
http://sailing.glu4.com/

Looks good.

Use this to help look for a location. Filter by each class, click on the markers, zoom in... It is the sailng database that the ISO / Buzz / Boss & Spice sailors have been signing up to. Still in development mode and this is the only link to it. (Well done to Ian Moss for the coding and me for the donkey work of entering the details!)

Hi
Just remember few of us would relish organising venues etc for opens/nationals so do spare a thought for those who have put the hard leg-work into arranging Llundudno (three cheers for Colin and Isobel for all the hard work they have put in to arrange events this year). Getting an event on a bank holiday must be a real nightmare. If people don't want to go to Wales (is it the distance or the fact accommodation might be sparse that is the real problem??) and feel strongly about a venue change how about helping Colin and Isobel and make some initial approaches to your local clubs to get the ball rolling - the end of August may be too late. In my humble opinion events are usually best when there are some local boats from the club so would any of your clubs be able to host events?? Personnally I would be happy going to North Wales but happy to go with the flow.

I agreee with Jane that it is hard work for anyone sorting out venues and also that it is perhaps easier when Buzzes/ISOs etc are registered and ACTIVE at the chosen venue/club.

It is also very enouraging to see the fruits of Pete's hard work,i.e.for this first time we can see where in the UK there is the greatest potential for events with large turn outs in 2008.

Obviously, as nice as Kilmarnock is, it is is probably not the best place to have the nationals or a Gala event in 2008.

I fear a trip to Llandudno would be a disaster for the class ( Buzz's but possibly ISO's also ), however great a sailing venue Llandudno is its way away from the strong fleets and with no home boats a large turnout is wishfull thinking in the extreme ! Thats not to mention the possible shortage of B & B.
As I see it there are possibly ten regular travellers that will go to the nationals were or when ever it's held, then there are ten to twenty club racers who will go to the nationals IF its easy to travel to with suitable B&B's available. A visit to a popular easily accessable venue with a home fleet could see thirty boats. The risk of Llandudno ( or ANY Welsh venue ) is no club racers will make the effort and some of the regular travellers are put off, a sub ten boats entry could be on the horizon.
I know its difficult to find venues and alot of thankless work goes on behind the scenes to make nationals happen but lets carefully consider the current thinking.

I would tend to agree with Simon on this. I have never been to Llandudno and would hope to go but do not normally plan any event more than a few weeks before, mainly because myself and any potential crew would not know if we are able to go before then. I have certainly made no plans for the nats this year and don't even have a crew yet.

If there is any doubt about the venue and there are other possibilities now is the time to consider them; I do appreciate the issues regarding the planning involved in these events though.

P.S. Just been to Croatia for 2 weeks. Almost every day would have been perfect sailing conditions ranging from force 3 - 5. Unfortuntely they have so much coastline dinghy sailing is so spread out it is almost none existant. Looked like some good yacht racing going on at the weekend though. There is the odd ISO and BOSS out there though - http://www.rare-bird.org/sailingcenter.shtml

Unfortunately I feel the same. I can't see myself planing that far ahead. Also I have done a nationals at Llandudno and perhaps I was unlucky but it wasn't one to remember for the hospitality. The club was empty most nights! If you are reading this and come from Llandudno I am sorry but that's what happened albeit thirteen years ago.
