Hi
Still trying to work out the mechanics of tacking - the main problem I have at the moment is getting under the boom without kneeling. At 6'1" (and past my bendiest years) I realise I may be a bit on the big side - does anyone have any ideas or tips that might help with this ?
Thanks
Matt

At 6'1" you may struggle whichever method you use, but the method I use is to make sure you roll tack the boat & tack at a steady speed so you have time to move across the boat in a controlled manner. If you cross the boat whilst walking uphill (slightly not lots!!) then it is easier to duck under the boom, it does mean that the crew also has to cross the boat at the right time as well. I hope that makes sense!!
There is a video of us in our 'Spice on the Solent' on You Tube, this does show one tack and I think I use the method explained above.

Thanks Stu
We're working on trying to get a bit of roll, and also leaving it as late as possible for the helm to move so that I'm moving up into the gap on the new windward side as the boom has already passed the center line - will have to carry on experimenting...
Cheers

Hi Matt
I’m 6ft and have had back surgery which has left me very stiff. I find that, more often than not I’m on my knees. The best advice I can give is to roll tack and to be on one knee and to drive you body across the boat with your other foot. With practise you will find right place to place your knee and foot.
